I know one is Direct x 10, and one is Direct X 9. I'm really wondering whether the new features of Direct X 10 are worth getting the 8700M. Please help me!

    Thanks

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. Sorry.

I see your point, it's kind of an argument for better framerates now, or better features later. Do we know what kind of features DX10 adds? Are they worth the performance hit now?

shading/shadows/lighting, color depth, picture realism, and more eye candy.
    8700 gt gets my vote.
when i get mt 8600 gt in my dell e1520, i might oc it to 8700 speeds. then it would be even more ridiculous! :)

This is a review of 3 DX10 games with performance comparisons to the DX9 codepath. The 8700M GT is clocked slower than the desktop 8600GTS, and the 8600GTS just isn't capable of playing DX10 games as it is implemented right now. The difference in effects between the codepaths as it is implemented right now is mainly in lighting and particle effects. In the future, once developers start using geometry shaders, it should allow for higher polygon counts and denser environments (ie. multiple trees generated on the fly in the GPU from a few precreated polygon models instead of having to design each tree beforehand and load it).

    Thanks for the help everyone!

So Data, you're saying that the 7950 GTX would be your choice?

I guess my final question is purely speculation...do we know when the 8800 notebook cards will come out? Will they cost the same as the current 7950 GTX, or be significantly more expensive?

The 8800M is scheduled to be out in Winter.... speculated to be on 17"+ notebooks.

Although the only 15.4" notebook that might have a chance to upgrade to it is the Asus C90S
