Is it true that the geforce 8700m coming out in august is going to be the top-end mobile graphics card of the 8-series or is there supposed to be an 8800m coming out later? I read somewhere that the 8700m was going to replace the go 7950gtx but that seemed weird to me.

Currently, it is the fastest nVidia DX10 graphics card available, and there are a few notebooks supporting it. The 8800M has also been spotted in the specifications of a particular Toshiba notebook, but nothing is yet known on its released date.

The 8700M GT doesn't have any gaming benchmarks just yet, and with these new cards, 3DMark scores are not reflecting the graphics cards true in game performance.

ok so it's currently the fastest dx10 notebook gpu. Isn't it essentially just an overclocked 8600m gt?

Yes, its currently the fastest. However, its expected that nVidia will release some other, faster graphics cards. The 8700M GT is just an overclocked 8600 GT.
