Hi guys,
Im getting my very first gaming laptop soon and I've narrowed it down to 2 machines. Both have intel i7 4800, 700gb 7200rpm, 1080p screen.
The difference is this:
gtx 870m + 120gb SSD
or
gtx 880m without an SSD
Which would be better?
I dont do any video editing or the like and Im planning on having this machine last me 3-5 years so im trying to future proof as well. Also, to 870m or 880m owners, any issues with over heating?
Thank you for your help!![]()

Neither. Wait until Maxwell hits the market this summer. I'm sure whatever you have now will suffice for another 3-4 months.

Although if you MUST pick one and can't postpone, the 880m will still be very much stronger than a 870m, and overclocking will widen the gap even more. Considering the normal cost of the 880m, you can very well pick up a cheap SSD later, for something like 100-150$, and you'd be getting much more value overall.

Thanks for the replies. Is it 100% sure that the maxwell gpu's will be released this summer?
More importantly, which would be better for overall gaming: gtx 870m or radeon r9 m290x? The r9 is about $80 more. I wasnt expecting the 880 to be so expensive.. heh -

Since the 880 is too expensive for me right now. Which would be better for a gaming laptop:
Gtx 870m + SSD or r9 m290x without an SSD?
Thanks guys ! -
I would take an SSD and 870M well before an 880M without one if my budget couldn't buy both.
If you can buy an SSD sometime in the near future maybe you can live without it. If this is it for a year or more, get the SSD.HTWingNut likes this. -
