firstly have you cleaned your vents and fans out at all. this is a major problem with temps going up.
what computer and spec have you got as it varys between models.

this is taken from the clevo guide which are gaming laptops:

there was a huge problem with that. Here are the details
    1. I run my 9600m GT on a Hp Dv7 .....
    2. I wanted to run my 9600 M Gt on slightly higher freqs.
    3. As the tool didn't give any indication of mobile GPUs .... i decided to chuck it ....
    4. People warned me of temps that arise out of OCIng, which is when I downloaded GPU Z and cheched for my temps anyways ........

    Mr DJ
going by your post, 88*C, when the card is being used seems perfectly fine, as it isn't in the danger zone ..... whay say ?

in my old 8600 gs 88*c was like the crititcal point. the 96xx gpus are supposed to have better soldering than the 86xx cards but do watch those temps especailly if they are still increasing.
what laptop do you have and what game are you playing with those temps

as i said above the quotes are for a clevo model which are gaming laptops and built to take the higher temperatures so really they were only for an example.

it might be worth you posting in the NBR HP Thread as they might be able to give you a better idea of max temps.

my former alptop was an hp9740us. hp used to have a bad rep because of poor thermal design. i dont know if that has been corrected with your model.
as mr dj says check the hp forums but if i were you id clean that fan just the same.

i have a Dv5t which quite similar.. this is what i did so i can OC to 625/1550/400 with max temp of 80C at 30C ambient in super stressing GPU games.. usually it hits 75C...

    1. Undervolt the CPU using the undervolting guide..
    2. Blow ur vents with compressed air..
    3. Try REB's riva tuner tweak.. it undervolts GPU in a way and i still can OC..

[How To] Use Rivatuner as a better "Powermizer" alternative

    4. Get a notebook cooling pad.
