So, I have Gateway 6831FX and it has an 8800M GTS, which I noted has about the same specs (other than clock speed) as a 9600GT. So I got a 9600GT to build my brother-in-law a new PC (before you start throwing things he only plays WoW). My 8800M GTS in my laptop plays WoW and EQ and Aion (beta) just fine at 1680x1050 and I figured the 9600GT would be a fine choice since both have 64 unified shaders, 16 ROPs, both have a 256bit memory interface, both have 512MB GDDR3. The 9600GT is slightly overclocked at 700/925 and the 8800M GTS is stock clocked at 500/799. The 8800m has 28.0 GTextels while the 9600GT only has 22.4 GTextels. By any logic the 9600GT should crush the 8800M with the core clock being 200Mhz higer and mem clock 126Mhz higher, but according to GPUZ the 8800M is more powerful. What gives???

IMO this all depends on the architecture of the GPU's, not only on the raw timings of the cards. Plus 8800m is smaller than desktop 9600 GT - and this might sounds ridicolus, but I think that the smaller the card - the faster transfer is between it's interior components, compared to card of the same timings in desktop version.

You need benches/frame tests, not GPU-Z!

Anyways, it's widely known fact that Nvidias 9xxx series are just re-branded 8xxx series cards. Therefore, you should be comparing your 9600GT to the 8600GT, not the 8800GTS. You assumption that the newer 9600GT is more powerful than the older 8800GTS is incorrect because the 9600GT is based off the 8600GT. -
8800M GTS:
64 SP
16 ROPs
256bit
512MB GDDR3
9600 GT:
64 SP
16 ROPs
256bit
512MB GDDR3 -
At those clocks, the 9600 GT would slaughter your 8800M GTS. -
Btw, buying a 9600 GT over ATI's 4770 was a very short sighted purchase, as the 4770 is similarly priced while giving the performance of a 4850.

Intel E6300 Wolfdale OC'd to 3.5Ghz
ASUS G41 based MB
4GB OCZ 1066 DDR2
WD 500GB 16mb SATA2
ASUS Blu-Ray DVD+-RW
PNY 9600GT 512MB GDDR3
I had to keep it under $450... -
I assume both of them are DDR3.
8800M GTS is known as high-end GPU.
While 9600M GT is known as mid-range GPU.
It is obvious 8800 beats 9600.
Basically, 8800 will compared to 9800. While 9600/9500 will compared to 8600. -

Also, TFR is just Core clock * TMUs, which means that the 8800mGTS has more TMUs than the 9600GT, which is logical considering they are considered to be in different classes. -

I have the same card as you, and while we can OC up to meet the same level as the 9600GT at stock, they can still go much higher and still beat out the 8800m GTS.
But yeah assuming the Desktop has comparable hardware to my laptop then yeah us with the 8800mGTS can match the preformance -
The 8800M GTS is about equal to a 9600GT in a desktop. At the same clock speeds, they'll perform similar.
8800M GTS outperforms a 9600GT desktop GPU????
