I have a EVGA 8800GT SC (725mhz core / 1040mhz mem) and i have around 10 days left on my Step-Up. I was thinking of getting the 9800GTX since its only $90 more, but i was looking at reviews, and they compared it with the 8800GT and its only ~10fps more.

Should I trade in my 8800GT for the 9800GTX for $90? I would do it without a problem, but the waiting is going to suck since I'm going to have to spend my time on an old P4 1.4GHz w/ 256mb of ram and a 64mb videocard until i get it back.

The games I play are CSS, Crysis, F.E.A.R., UT3, and maybe Rainbow Six Vegas 2 when I get some money. I'm happy with my 8800GT, but the only reason I'm thinking about getting the 9800GTX is its $90 for me and i wouldnt think of buying it for $350 unless I can't play games with my card anymore (like if it breaks or its too old to play new games)

    Thanks

I think it would be a wise upgrade. Though I heard the 9-series is going to be EOL this summer so I would wait until the next lineup.

I do not personally believe that the difference in performance of the 8800GT to the 9800GTX is worth $90. Seeing as both cards pretty much use the same architecture, there most likely will not be a game which will be playable on the 9800GTX, but not on the 8800GT.
You will be better off saving the $90 and spend it on a new card in a few years time.

    Actually, that depends...

the 9800GXT, like the 7950GTX2, houses 2 cards running at SLI, but each of the individual cards is weaker than the 8800GT. On games that are optimized for SLI (ie. Crysis, CoD4, HL2), the 9800 will run a LOT faster than the single 8800GT, but on the other hand, if the game does not take advantage of SLI (ie. UT3), then there will not be performance gains, and can sometimes even lead to performance drop due to SLI (UT3)...

Going up to the 9800 is future-proof since more games are going to be released in the future supporting mutiple GPUs, but as of right now, you might be forced to turn off SLI for some games to acutally increase performance.

If I were you, I would say YES, Upgrade, but that depends on you.

PS. Here's a good review on game performance with and without SLI, check it out, may help with your decision:

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4121
(Realize that in games like UT3 and Soldier of Fortune, Performance acutally DROPPED with SLI enabled...just some fruits for thought)

He is referring to the GTX, not GX2. ;)

I'd just wait personally. If your 8800GT was like the 256MB version, then yes that would be worthy upgrade. But the 9800GTX does not offer much like the 7900GTX -> 8800GTX did.

There is no way that I would spend those 90 dollars on that upgrade. I would save them for the upcoming GT200 from nvidia, and then use the 8800GT as a physics processor once nvidia gets that up and running (which shouldn't be too long hopefully)

Yeah, like ScifiMike12 said, you are thinking about the 9800GX2, which if upgradable from a 8800GT for just $90, is a bargain.

The 9800GTX, however, is only about 10fps faster than the 8800GT at best. So, the question simply becomes whether or not an extra 10fps is worth $90.

    Wow that was fast =)

Yeah i think im gunna stick with the 8800GT, and maybe get the akimbo cooler cuz i hate the noise lol. I just ran ATItool for like 45mins, and my graphics card is stable at 725MHz Core and 1090MHz memory (650 core 950 memory at stock) and i havnt gone any higher. is that physics thing supposed to be really good? Like would it have a big fps boost?

The 9800GTX is better but not that much. They probably will stop playing games arround the same time...

he 9800GTX is a G92 8800GTX and it performs a little higher than the 8800ULTRA so...

If you game at 20fps, then 10 fps is all the difference you need.
If most games run fluently at OVER 30 fps, the upgrade is useless. It`s better off to start saving for a 10th series card.

    GT200 what what?
Link please? Never heard of that one before. But since my PC is literally falling apart day by day, I'm desperately looking forward to new GPU's being released (because I don't really want to invest in a 9800 which is what, 20% faster than the GPU from 18 months ago)

Mistake me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't this be catagorized in Desktop Hardware?

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

    There, I did :)

Also, this is a Graphics Card question, so it's relevant.
