go for the 8800 gts as you get the gurantee of performance regardless of sli problems as most games do not scale well with sli

If I could upgrade my rig to SLI or 8800m GTS, I'd take the GTS and never look back.

SLI support is STILL flaky with some games, as well as the whole DX9 VS 10 thing (more for future proofing than current game benefits.)

SLI is nothing but a gimmick for rich enthusiasts. It'll give you performance in many games, yeah... but it's rather misleading when people say that SLI offers you a future upgrade path for your current rig without having to buy a brand-new, expensive videocard. Often you'll find that a single modern card outperforms the cards of yesteryear in SLI; take a look at benches of the 8800 GT/GTS/GTX versus the 7900/7950 GT SLI/GTX SLI/GX2.

This is very subjective.... If you're asking better in terms of the life of the GPU, then the 8800 will obv serve you better, having DX10 support. On the other hand, if you're asking performance wise, SLi can just about NEVER give you 200% performance of a single GPU, as a layman would expect... And therefore the 8800 wins again even performance wise.. So it's quite clear which GPU is better. ;)

8800mGTS wins...most games don't have good enough SLi support and performance gains at max are 40%ish maybe 50%. 8800 add dx10 support as well.

@dodgehemi0- the 8800mGTS is an excellent card...why do you say its not as good as you thought?

Well the reason I said that is i saw that the 8700 sli beat it I was just expecting it to be getting around 8500 scores out of the box when I see it is not getting that I saw the gateway XL FX and it got pretty low scores I saw a SAGER 5793 with the GTX get 9500 out of the box. I was supposed to have my 171X FX but I guess China is on a strike or something... It still is a good card I am new to laptops and I guess I was expecting more that is all...

your comparing based on 3dmark scores? couldnt think of a worse way.

maxing every game except for crysis for less then 1500 in a portable package is less then u expected? i dont get it, some ppl are never pleased

a little thought just came across my mind earlier today. I am waiting for the new clevo 15" with 8800m gtx, but i config. a m9750 with SLI 7950GTX for only $16xx at AW today.
the 3dmark06 scores of both card are approx. 75xx vs. 95xx
should I consider the m9750? it looks kinda sexy to me plus i don't want to wait for months

i saw that too, really not a bad price and 7950GTX is a little better then one 8800m GTX. get the 1440x900 screen and you would be pretty good for a while. also it is QUITE sexy i must agree.

    BUT

SLI pretty much nevers works how it was supposed to so that could be a flop, and it has quite old processors, but other then that its not really that bad.

Your choice, your just going to be upgrading again sooner if u go with the m9750 and plan on gaming with it for a long time.

narsnail, thanks for your reply, what'd you mean upgrading sooner? like the GPU?
I wouldn't worry about the CPU tho, as I found nearly no difference between my thinkpad and macbook pro(boot camp)
and did you just say a SLI 7950 GTX is better than one 8800m GTX?

if SLI works properly, which it wont. the only real "benchmark" reflects that 7950GTX SLI is better then one 8800m GTX is 3dmark, but I hate it so it does not matter. Let me restate that, they should be close to equal

yeah, you had better take a closer look at that link he posted. the 7950gtx won in 3dmark01 and lost everywhere else. (who cares about 3dmark01??) :D
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
the only cards beating that 8800m gts card is 1-4 and out of those...only one is not sli enabled. oh yeah.... and the 8700m gt sli is barely squeaking by. so that makes 5 cards and 4 of which are sli.

don't worry dodgehemi, our card is up there for sure! :D

i've actually done real life testing in games with this and i can assure you the 8800mGTS does better in actual games. crysis for one...does better with 8800m

This is because the 8800m GTS and 8800m GTX has much higher raw shader power compared to 7950GTX. SLI 7950GTX is not equal to one 8800m GTX in terms of games performance.

Brainer's right, proper coding in newer games can allow for as much as 95% fps increase in SLI.

eleron, in certain ares in bioshock i could get 105% , and johnkss set everything to max, ress 1440x900 then load the stage before the proving grounds , look at the window and take a screen showing your FPS

EDIT: i'm off to study maths, i'll check on this thread in an hour or so

Brainer, i second you with UT3, Bioshock, Gears... But Assassin's Creed? and Grid DEMO? ... Those are 2 games where i don't see performance increase after turning SLI on... Would you tell me your config... How you set up those games in the Nvidia Control Panel?

Or maybe the problem are the drivers? Which one are you using?

Let's see... How many FPS (average) you get in Assassin's Creed with 1400x900 res and all maxed (including multisample 3/3)... Using 175.63 ... :(

hummmm, these angles are interesting... think we need to have a sceen with a lot of action in it. i see if i turn a little here and there the frame rate jumps. and if you look at the sky or have more sky in a picture it skyrockets to 95+ frames....
