More specifically, would the Gateway P-6831FX with 8800m GTS for $1350 at Best Buy or the Alienware M9750 configured with Go 7950 GTX SLI for $1949 give better gaming performance?

gateway with better processor would probably pwn the alienware. The gateway is built off of santa rosa if I remember right. take the 600 you save and buy a good T7300 or 7500 and you should be able to beat the alienware.

This review compares the 8800M GTX with the Go 7950 GTX in SLI. The 8800M GTS is going to be slower than the 7950s in SLI, but something worth mentioning is that the GTS is going to have superior image quality. The 8 series has CSAA - which is AWESOME - and vastly superior Anisotropic Filtering. On that basis alone I'd probably go with the 8800M.

I would go with the 8800m GTS, there is somewhat small performance difference between the two (or three, however you look at it) and the Gateway is cheaper. And another reason to go for the gateway is that it is actually a new design (aesthetically speaking) and is pretty nice looking.

SLI is hit or miss in my experience, as is detailed here:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4121
If you look at that review, you'll see that SLI works great in some games (up to 2x performance increase vs. single card) but in games that don't support SLI, it's a flop.

I'd go with the single, more powerful card for the most consistent gaming experience. The 8800M-GTS should be faster than a single Go7950GTX in newer games.
