I just have a pretty straight forward question: how does a 8800M GT compare to the desktop video cards? like what is it's approximate equivalent?

laptopgpu are underclocked and less powerful than their desktop counterparts so i would say an 8700 maybe. to be sure u could check 3d marks scores
-
Okay be easy 8800MGTX and I believe it is on par with the Desktop 8800GS but not to sure. It may not even be on par with any Desktop 8800 Series!
-
THERE IS NO DESKTOP 8700 card.
Laptop GPU's are not far off from desktop ones, the performance difference is usually no greater than %10.
The laptop 8800m GTX is as powerful as a desktop 8800GTS 640MB. -
No desktop 8700 cards but there are very high end 8600 desktop cards. I also see in Desktop cards have a broad range of models. For Example in laptops there is 2 8600 cards while in desktops there are 4-7 different ones like GS GT GTX so on.

no, there is the 8600 GS , GT, and GTS, there are no other forms of the desktop 8600.

8600gts with gddr4 might be less powerful than the 8800m
look at the specifics. -
-
oh then I guess it's a lot more powerful than I originally anticipated...
-
Probably less powerful than a 8800GTS 640, since the bus is only 256 bit and memory is at 512 where the 8800GTS 640 has a 320bit wide bus and 640MB of Video Memory. Clock/Shader/Memory wise they are the same, well except the factory overclocked brands like XFX, GainWard etc which has faster clock speeds.
8800m Gt
