Was emailing Nvidia tech support trying to get some info on laptop GPUs (asking their advice on buying a gaming laptop - get one now with an 8700m? Or a Go 7950? Wait for the 8800m? Etc. etc.) and they let on about the 8800m:
It seems it is definite: http://www.imagehosting.com/show.php/1202993_nvidia8800definiteitseems.jpg.html
But it also looks like we might have a while to wait for it.
(I've attached a screenshot of the message below as well - no idea how long it'll stay hosted online)

Interesting...
-
That's in line with what we've heard from retailers and whatnot. Still, one more confirmation is always good.
-
Yep. It looks pretty promising for the higher end gaming notebooks to get a true DX10 replacement for the Go7950GTX, not just a glorified 8600GT.
-
If only they could safely shove it in a 15.4", that would be nice hehe.
-
Might work on a fujitsu siemens. The Xi Series tend to support MXM III, and the Pi has the same mobo. I read somewhere that FS won't use MXM in the future though...
-
Yes, it has a MXM-III mobo (one of the very few 15.4" with MXM-III), but it won't accept the newer MXM-III cards. Ice-Tea did an article on it on his website a while back, I believe.
-
I can't find it. But what i meant was that future FS laptops might fit a 8800, IF FS don't move away from MXM. And if the 8800 is MXMIII.
-
I think there's a real possibility of the 8800m being MXM-II, personally. I wouldn't bet on it, but I think the possibility is definitely there.
-
I for one have a problem with that: I don't think nVidia discusses unreleased cards with private customers (mainly because, in the past, they always told me they didn't
)
Also, the mail address seems a bit fishy to me: [email protected] is a bit strange imo (although their support site is nvidia.custhelp.com). -
You do? Why?
I don't think we'll be seeing it in a 15,4" stock.
And now I want an announcement on HD 2900XT -
I still believe there will be a 22w variation of it. It's almost certainly technically possible, just a die shrink of the 8700M-GT with double the bus width.
Edit: And that is their real email address, just google it. -
Well, a die shrink of the 8700gt is not a 8800 IMO. I want a true, g80/g81 based mobile card. It doesn't ahve to be as ridiculously powerful as the 8800 GTX or even 8800GTS. Just more powerful than 7950GTX.
-
Not gonna happen. If there was any conceivable way of putting the G80 core in a laptop it would have been done by now. I'm 90% certain that the reason it's taken so long (and the reason the 8700M-GT was released) is because they have to design a whole new core with the new 65nm die.
-
You mean update (like g71 was for g70) or brand new (g70->g80). Because a 65nm G81 with 256bit bus might work.
-
I like how they had to confirm that the 8800M will be better than the 8700M.
-
-
The 8700 is already MXM-III, so i doubt they'll release the 8800 in MXM-II
(If they do: so much the better of course)

I Dont Care If Its Mxmii Mxmiii As Long As Its Out And We Know It!!! Cuz Im In Desperate Need For A Crysis Ripping Laptop!!!!
-
W00T, my AW is MXMIII, seriously considering an upgrade...

This is interesting news although I still don't feel any more confident about the 8800M chip.
I remember something that happened some time ago with the original Dell XPS. It was released with the exclusive Mobility Radeon 9800, which was actually a version of the desktop X800 and not a 9800. Perhaps we'll get an 8800M but it will actually be an entirely different core as odin said . . . -
1) Uniwill moved away from MXM
2) 8 series MXM cards seem to be incompatible with older MXM platforms. Looking for a way around that but it's like strolling around in the jungle without a compass and your leg shot off. -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah the 8800 mxm was why I bought the c90. That mainly because of milestones report than from Asus than an 8800 would go into it.
This confirmation is good but yeah we probably won't see this baby before november. -
The M570RU can be equiped with either the 7950 MXM-IV or the 8700 MXM-III. If they are not compatible, that would mean a different motherboard has to be used? It would also mean that those who opted for a 7950 can forget about ugrading?
Or do you mean something else? -
The 7950 is, AFAIK, also according to the MXM 2.0 or 2.1 spec which seems to be the root cause for incopatibility.
-
And what's causing the problems?
The change from 1.0 to 2.0?
Or from 2.0 to 2.1?
(And, would you happen to know what the changes were? nVidia offers only the specs from 2.1 atm) -
Can't say much about it atm.
-
-
Well anyways... im not sure about 8700gt playing crysis with no problems such as I want to play it at:
Minimum 1280*800
Full graphics
Full physics
Full effects
Minimum 25fps
Average FPS more than 30
so.... im not all too sure right now -
Well, considering it runs Bioshock at 1440x900 on high, you should be okay. Pair it up with a good processor for the physics, and you should be set.

I mean... its crysis people... I demand FULL ON EVERYTHING Im talking AA and AS maybe too

Dont worry bout processor...I just want to get my gpu choice straight... im sure ill get 2.4 c2d or quad
-
You won't get max settings, I'm sorry. You'll get very high settings, but not max. Consider that this is a game designed to still be enjoyable several years down the line, the max settings aren't even aimed at current generation cards. Besides, you'll almost certainly get better picture quality playing it at medium high settings on 1440x900 than lowering the resolution purely for the sake of maxing out settings.
-
Any card that can play it at MAX!!! ??? lol seriously... I really want to get a gpu that will perform the best it can with crysis even if I have to wait up to a month after release -
Good news
EDIT: NVM for the rest, misready crysis for bioshock -

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Someone must be jumping around pretending he is wearing the nanosuit considering how obsessed he is with crysis.
-
-
No im just bassing my facts that if my lappie will play crysis at high settings, my lappie is powerful... cuz If now I ask you guys about a laptop that will play games, edit video and stuff... ill get 1000+ laptops to look at... -
Well, for a bleeding edge game asking for MAX settings on a laptop is unreasonable, as laptop's do not get bleeding edge tech. We're not lying to you when we say that an 8700M-GT will be plenty to make Crysis look good at 1280x800 or even 1440x900.
-
-
We don't have enough performance data on SLI 8700M-GT yet to predict how it will do in Crysis, I'd just wait until all the variables are taken care of (Crysis released, 8800m announced or not, M1730 benchmarks confirmed) and then make your decision.
-
How will I know when 8800m announced? And benchmarks? I usually never look up benchmarks.. usually because I understand them but I just eyeball for the best score... and then find out price is sick and I go onto the forums even after looking and knowing... lol -
Once that happens, just come asking around here and we'll interpret the benchmarks for you.

Well how about a Super computer cluster of 10000 64core sun processors running at 2.88ghz liquid nitro cooled with a cluster of 42 nvidia quadro plax sporting each 4 9850gx2 oc'ed for 1.4 teraflops on each card?
I think that should give me about 100fps
never said you were kidding... just not happy that you where talking about desktop... im in need for a lappie
8800m confirmed :D !
