8800m gtx and gts the same card hardware wise?

Hey everyone, I just picked up a new gateway P-16831fx and it has the 8800m gts as everyone knows.

I was thinking, is the 8800m gtx and gts the same card, just the 8800m gts has some stream shaders shut off with firmware? It seems like it would make more sense for nvidia to make just one card and then shut off some stream shaders in the lower end models to save money.

If that is true would it be possible to flash the bios of a 8800m gts to a gtx and possibly get those stream shaders turned on?

I know its a long shot, but I remember with certain ati cards it would work.

Im curious to see other people's thoughts on this. Im sure a lot of people know more about it then me.

i was thinking that same thing, but they probably cut the pipelines witha laser or something to make sure smart people like us didint figure it out.

hmm do you think if you flashed a gtx bios onto this card if it didnt work properly you could still get into dos to flash it back?

I don`t think so. They should be different from manufacturing, because otherwise the 8800M GTS would be a waste of a good GTX.
Then again, marketing suggests their the same thing with crippled SPs...so might be software-wise possible to unlock the other SPs. If so, nvidia would get a kick in the nuts :D

Anyone wanna play guinee pig by flashing the bios ? :D

I would be game lol I just helped my friend flash his ATI 3850 last night to up the voltage, its not really that hard.

I just hope that if it doesnt work properly i can still get into dos to relfash the old bios

What is your thoughts on it still working if not the proper bios? I have never seen anyone flash a card with the wrong bios so I dont know what generaly happens if its wrong? does it not work at all? or is it crashes and such?

I think ATI & Nvidia just cut the extra shaders after what happened with the first GF6200.

In case you want to know, a 8800M GTS G92M would be a defective G92M where all the 96SPs aren't working. You gotta be extremly lucky to get a card that has all the SP/Multiplier (CPU) working.

Well, since it`s a laptop, who`s to say? In a desktop WORST POSSIBLE SCENARIO you would change the mainboard.
But then again, reflashing the BIOS should be just as easy as flashing it,and again, you should be convered by warranty ...or not :D

Well, they`re not that far priced one from another...so I wouldn`t call it dirt cheap.

And imho the risk is not justified.

I flashed my EVGA 8800GT SC, with KO/SSC bios back and forth to find good timing for the clock/shader/memory so I don't have to run rivatuner to OC it.

In the end, its flashed back to SC bio because I need rivatuner regardless to OC it to higher timings.

Now, where can we find a 8800mGTX bios?

I don't think it would break it. it would just need re flash back with the original bios so just make a back up. the only problem i could see is not having a display output to navigate threw the flashing process to flash back to original. I suppose you could right down the steps but it would be sketchy at best. But i say do it. The world has to know!! :D

Flashing the bios is not hard at all. That being said flashing the bios for the purposes of overclocking seems pretty useless to me, but its great to increase the voltage and such. Theres no real threat as long as you remember to keep a backup of your old bios.

Heres a link to the 8800m gtx bios.
    http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/...acturer=&model=8800M+GTX&interface=&memSize=0

But i don't think it will work i have herd of people trying to flash a 8800gt to a 8800gts 512 and it for the most part stop working they flashed it back and it worked fine. If you can get a new one from best buy i would try it.

    Heres some good guilds

ok going to try it, just dont have a pen drive, only have a memory card reader usb drive and it wont read it...what else could I use.

Also there is no way this will wreck anything....im not changing clock speeds at all just opening up some stream processors...and if they have been cut no worries.

will not read my pen drive, I used this guide to copy my original BIOS, and it claims every time that i have an invalid command or the drive does not exist...I cannot figure it out and its pissing me off.

I haveit formatted to FAT, the 98 boot files are on, and I extracted the Nvflash files to my drive...anyone might know whats up?

yes invalid command, and if you just take a glance at that guide, it says you type in nvflash(space)-b(space)OLDBIOS.ROM.

it will just have the C:\> and then I type in that command it says invalid command.

when I type in C:\> h: (which is the pen drive) and then the command it says invalid directory.

is C:\> allready the pen drive?

no the command is nvflash NEWBIOS.ROM
    nvflash OLDBIOS.ROM

    No -b in it.

To check what the drive is, plug it in normally and see whats its named.

Make sure you made you usb drive the first boot device that way it will default to c: and then just run nvflash command to check to see if you even can access the file on the jump. Make sure that you didn't put any files into folders. just makes it complicated. And it needs to be formatted with the hp tool. I have cwsdpmi.exe nvflash.exe and my rom files from old and new bios and a wmpinfo.xml on my jump drive. O ya and it helps to make the rom names short like newbios.rom oldbios.rom . and space mess it up for me sometimes so try to keep the file names short and sweet good luck.

ok I got NV Flash to work finally!

the line Forerunner gave me flashes a new BIOS i think.

The one with the "-b" in it grabs my old one, but ti claimed I do not have an Nvidia display adapted...so I am going to find an 8800m GTS bios, flash it, and when thats stable I will flash a 8800m GTX BIOS......wish me luck :)

ok so! I cannot obtain my BIOS because it says there is no Nvidia display adapter.

I couldnt not find an 8800m GTS one so I just went ahead and tried to flash the 8800m GTX BIOS, but again it said no Nvidia display adpater could be found.

I think the BIOS is locked, I cant really get around that.

You should be able to back up your 8800m gts bios to the jump.
I think you will have to wait for nvflash to be updated so it supports 8800m
