NVIDIA is planning a new top-end graphics processor for notebooks that will outperform the GeForce 8700M GT just a few months after its release, claim visitors to the recent Computex expo in Taiwan. The upgrade would be known as the 8800M GTX and would effectively be a mobile-optimized version of the imminent GeForce 8800 GT for desktops. The architecture would be virtually the same save for a lower clock speed and switching on power saving measures that are unnecessary for the desktop card, according to the report.

The part would be intended primarily for desktop replacement notebooks such as the Clevo D900C and may also find its way into mainstream systems like the Dell XPS M1730; the chip would be available on a removable MXM card format with either 256MB or 512MB of memory for gaming notebooks that allow replacement video cards as an upgrade.

An official release date has not been announced, but the apparent leak would point to an NVIDIA launch of the 8800M GTX on November 19th, roughly three weeks after the introduction of the desktop hardware. Clock speeds and other details have not yet been leaked.

GeForce 8800M based on new chip cod-named “NB8E” was showed off at Computex show by NVIDIA. NB8E will come to market as NB8E-GTX, NB8E-GT and NB8E-SE. These codenames will probably end as GeForce 8800M GTX, 8800M GT and 8800M GS”.

These new series will have less 3D performance compare to 8800 counterparts using in Desktop PCs. It happens because they have to fit to notebook’s temperature and power consumption. But this will be the most powerful chip for gaming notebooks.

    I've a M1730, with 8700M Sli (256+256Mb)... will I be able to upgrade to 8800M GTX?

Is 8700M a Mobile PCI EXpress Module?

EDIT: Turns out it is - phew! hopefully will be able to go ahead if needs be in the future :)

Also is an easy enough job to swap the cards? -Don't want to wreck a brand new laptop!

    Many thanks.

as long as they offer htis card on the 1730 you will be able to swap for two of these in sli i believe. you will just have to buy them, take out the 8700's, and put the 8800's in their place. If you order the new cards form dell, they might install them for you you should ask once they offer the card.

Well it's a shame that I'm pretty positive Toshiba won't offer upgrades.

Refresh? These cards came out less than 6 months ago. We won't see a refresh till late spring or early summer next year.

Zeph, Id say low 2k if you get decent other specs such as 2 gig ram and a 5400 rpm. With higher "other" specs mid to high 2k.

I was shooting for a 7200 rpm, but 2GB would be fine. So maybe around $2400?

All speculation of course. If you take the 8800 to be price of the 7950 gtx then the lowest 7950 notebook is baiscally 2k. Though I think it will be more mainly because of the premium for the biggest boy on the block.

Yep - I'd expect to pay well over $2K for a newly released top spec GPU laptop. Whether it costs less to manufacture or not doesn't matter. It's top dog and it'll cost top dollar.
