    Hi
I am new to this site so please bear with me.

I bought a faulty ACER Aspire 8930g and all that was wrong with it was the video card. So i got an 9600m gt 512 ddr2 rev c1 (mxm11). Howerver I get low frame rates when playing wow (15-20fps on med quality). I have even downloaded the latest drivers from nvidia, but still no good.

This laptop also came out with a 9700m gt (mxm111 I think), but it's specs dont seam much better than the 9600.

I have been able to overclock it to 620mhz core and 500mhz memory, better frame rates (20-25fps), but still not that good.

Here is the gpuz info [IMG] I have noticed when compaired to other peoples 9600gt specs (also using gpuz) that there memory speed is 800mhz wheres mine is 400mhz and also there bandwith is 27gbs wheres mine is only 12gbs, and ther is a few other differences to.

Did I get a crappy 9600gt video card?

Is there a better video card out there I can buy, like a 9800gs/gt. Is there any thing from ATI? Or does my problem lie else where?

I am a bit lost for what to do next.

The 9600M GT is the successor to the 8600M GT which is a very old card and looking at the fillrates and bandwidth will show you why you are seeing poor performance.

The 9700M GT is not marginally better but does chuck out better results than the 9600M GT especially in the bandwidth area it has faster GDDR3 memory which is double the speed of DDR2. You will notice the memory clocks compare as 400mhz to 800mhz.

I had the 8700M GT SLI the predocessor to the 9700M GT and even with SLI that struggled with todays games and was more powerful than one 9700M GT. The 8800 and 9800M GT where the only real cards made for gaming and still hold up today.

Sadly you might need to consider an upgrade if there are no other card upgrades available to you.

    Hi
    Thanks for your reply.
I can see the difference you are talking about i reguards to your 9700gt's higher band with and memory.
I will start looking around for a 9700gt and hope for the best.
    Thanks again

It will certainly be faster but if you want to raise your game on the newer games coming out you might consider selling up and upgrading if you have the cash you really want to try and move into the Class 1 GPU's for the likes of Battlefield 3 and Skyrim if you are interested. Take a look at notebook check.

You could try an Fx 3700M. it works inside the 8930g and with an hp version you can even flash it to a 280m.

Only problem is the heatsink, a 9600M heatsink will not fit an fx 3700m without modding. A 9700M might fit.

Conclusion => FX 3700m + heatsinkmodding = decent performance from an aging laptop!
