If you are comparing the GX70 with the 8970 to the GT60 with that $1000 comment.....

Is a good example of why that system is not for everyone.

So yes it is just you ;)

The 780M will have a commanding lead over the 8970M, the 1080p comment is due to the new bandwidth allowing it to stretch out even further than before, plus no one with an ounce of sense runs their high end notebook at 720p.

I don't even like running a low end notebook at 720p. That's just way too low to be pleasant.

Nvidia are terrible for CAD, AMD really excel here - I think they are at least 2-3 times better, although I don't remember where I read that.

Nvidia really killed the CAD performance when they dropped the hot clock (during the switch from Fermi to Kepler)

It will all change again next year.......... but I doubt Nvidia will close the GAP, it is more likely that AMD will do a similar move and cripple CAD performance to boost sales of their incredibly/excessively profitable workstation line ups

Is this really the case tho, because the 7970m outclassed the 680m in the CAD category.. This is something i want to know because my new laptop i want will be used for gaming and CAD so any information would be great :)

WOW!!!! 7970M improved by 30%??? When did that happen??? coz I gonna cancel all my planes to might upgrade to 780M or 8970M and I'll totally go with 7970M over my 680M SLI, NOW!!!
Where did you get all that wrong information?? tell me so I report all those sources for spam (OR it's simply fanboy thoughts?)..
Now here is the truth, on stock clocks the 680M & 7970M are near in performance (of course when 7970M works properly, because in most cases it doesn't).. Plus, with modded overclocking VBIOS there will be no room for 7970M to be compared to 680M because 680M gonna be like 25% higher than maximum overclocked 7970M..

@TinyW: At launch date and for the next 7-8 months, 7970m scored around 5000 points in 3dmark11 GPU P-test. Now it's ~6300 average. This increase was reflected in games with numbers ranging from +10-15% all the way up to 50% performance increase. Right now, a 7970m/8970m beats 680m stock. It can't touch 780m in almost any test, but at the same time, averaged out, the 780m only beats the 7970m/8970m (STOCK, not OC'd) by an average of 11% in games.
And please everyone shut up about your wonderful OC benefits. I've never had a stable, well-OC-ing card in my life.
Oh, and about your "of course when 7970M works properly, because in most cases it doesn't", cut it out. The whole internet knows by now the specific scenarios where the 7970m suffered, which were either:
    a. Enduro on.
    OR
    b. Crossfire on.

Both of those now work pretty well (even in machines they're not supposed to ;)).

Now before you kiss any more nVidia backside, tell me your honest to god stable 780m overclock... in case you even have the card.
I'm not denying they OC better, or that they're more powerful. But you're forgetting that even here, or on overclock.net, or on techinferno etc. most people DON'T OC. Because it's oftentimes not stable.
    Yay.

Oh, and it's a cool few hundred dollar more expensive card, just as 680m was before it, and only really meriting the whole comparison fuss because they were the flagships of their respective companies, but in any other scenario, nobody compares a 278GBP (ebay price) product to a 441GBP (ebay price) product, and expects to get taken seriously.

He's still under the impression that CUDA is supreme and divine these days.
In reality it depends on the specific application, but AMD has taken top horse in many of the OpenCL-supporting apps.

Got my P370SM with one Radeon HD 8970M and couldn't be happier (planning to get a 2nd in the near future for CrossfireX). So far it has run everything I have perfectly fine on highest settings, including Metro Last Light!! Easily getting over 45FPS! This is amazing considering I'm running stock clocks, and to be honest I don't even care about OC'ing.

The extortionate premium that nVidia seems to think its ok to charge for the 780M is unnacceptable, we should all gang up against them!!!!!

Cloudfire will go HAM on y'all.

No need to stoop to that level. Just keep buying your Radeons and feeling smug about it.
