I own a np8150 with a 6990m and was thinking of upgrading to the 7970m for 3d. do you think if i wait till spring the 8970m will be out and will it work with my np8150...I know you can only guess but what are your guesses..buy now or wait.

and how powerful will the new card probably be>?

There is only one thing we know for certain, there will be no process change so the only improvements will be from architecture so the leap is likely going to be less than the last generation.

Beyond that it is pure guess work. So no one except an AMD engineer could tell you, and they wont ;)

Large improvement. AMD already released info on the next architecture, it's not a die shrink or rebadge. They made some changes, but not for gaming it seems. Most of the emphasis is on parallel processing and GPGPU.

Source? I'm guess you're talking about the leaked Tenerife slide, and that's like a 20% improvement in sp compute over the 7970... which is significantly less than the 40% improvement that the 7970 was over the 6970.

It'll probably be a ~20% increase at the top end like all the other recent non die shrink gens.

Same architecture (GCN), better silicon, improved architecture, less jump than 6990M to 7970M.

Who knows how good the final product will be.

Well its still GCN, but they call it Graphic Core Next 2.0 aka improved architecture.
And because of this, they are able to make slightly bigger die with a little more cores.

We will see the exact same from Nvidia as well. And the cycle repeats itself

they'd better be, with haswell gpu incoming I see it trading blows with the 640m, which the latter already trade blows with the 7730m and the 7750m

but to be more precise I dont have any info regarding that, it should be just be basics again, 128 bit, we will see a +20% in transistor count, and consequently more cores, so all in all 20% performance increase if we are bad? BTW dont count me on that, as I said there isnt any solid info on the mars core, only on oland and venus AFAIK

By specs alone, the new HD8000 series should be a nice bump in performance. But I doubt mobile versions will be in for nearly another year.

im guessing 50 percent faster as usual. last two gens have be large increases.

it might not even be worth upgrading if you own a 580m/6970m/485m/675m/6990m as these cards already max most titles with aa turned off and heck even some with full aa at 1080p.

As the original poster asked any guesses if the upgrade will be possible on the NP1970?

And maybe if the 780m will be upgradable onto the MSI GT70?

Ahh i see, Is it true that the architect stays the same for 2 generations for the ATi? If so, I'm guessing 8000 and 9000 series will be using the same architect? Does this rule apply with Nvidia as well?

this varies a lot. Currently AMD is going to revamp GCN and nvidia is going to launch new cores with kepler, so in one hand we have not precise core changes and on the other hand nothing in terms of arch. The main problem here is the possible change of mxm format, which is the pcie interface that those high end mobile gpus use. And that is kind of problematic if you want to buy a new pc right now. The rumor of the change for a new pcie format has been going on since this year AFAIK

Well I plan to buy a laptop this year for college, then get a desktop 4 years later. As for the PCIE change, it should be done if it brings drastic performance changes.

I guess it will also depend on how optimized the drivers are with Enduro or what else is introduced. If we've learned anything with the 7970m, it's that the driver can play a large role in how well a card performs or is utilized. Any issues should get ironed out, but timelines vary.

Here is some rumored 8870 specs which the 8970M might be based on (7970M is based on 7870). We also have 8850 which might be the 8970M I suppose.

Core count goes from 1280 to 1792 and they are clocked the same.
    TDP goes down a bit, 7870 is 175W, 8870 is 160W.
7870 can reach 2.5 TeraFlops while 8850 can reach 3.0 TeraFlops and 8870 3.9 Teraflops

Not shure if these specs are legit or if they are plausible but you know, speculating is fun :)

I bet it's gonna have 2304 SP's and be based on HD8950 with lower clocks. I hope so....
