    Hey all,

First off sorry to start another 7800 based thread but I didn't see one covering this.

I am using the X-Treme G Drivers, (Most current) and I do OC to 350/880. This might sound like a really stupid question but I am going to ask anyway. Since I do OC, am I going to definately want to check the box to "always run fan?"

I was testing it idle with that option off and Windows seems to wait WAY too long before kicking the fan on. The temp was practically in red. I dont actually game much, my laptop is just doing desktop apps most of the time but I still like it OCed for when I log in WoW or whatever. The fan noice is a little bothersome, but if it's not safe for the GPU to have the fan off, then I will keep that option checked.

As I was writing this, another problem came up. I was testing it with the fan option on checked. I dont know if its always did this and I never noticed but even when I have the fan checked always on, its still does not remain on and the GPU temp creeps upwards. How can I MAKE it stay on and keep the gpu cool? I dont know if it's normal for it to go into the mid 70's when I am just idle on the windows desktop.

    Thank you for any imput.

    Thanks...

I would help you, but I don't have an Nvidia card and thus can't use those drivers. Keep the GPU fan on by all means. . let it regulate its speed and when it turns on automatically. Heat can really damage your card if you aren't careful.

Use the Xtreme-G drivers, but keep your fans on Auto.

Is auto the same as the always on checkbox? Because I have that on but it doesn't seem to be doing any good. I dont hear the fan running and the gpu temp is climbing. It seems to wait too long to kick it on. Unless that is just how it works. I by all means want the fan on... if I can just get it to do that.

you might have it set to "always on" but it might only kick in after a certain temperature. check to make sure that you do not have it set to a temperature that it is too high. if there is no option for this, report back.

    pb,out.

I had a problem like this with a program called Notebook Hardware Control (NHC). When I installed it, my fans (or rather, one of them) never came on, and it wasn't too good for my laptop. I uninstalled it as soon as I found out that was happening. Try uninstalling those drivers completely, install the stock ones, and see if that fixes the problem.

It only has an option for core slowdown threshold. There is no option to tell it when to kick the fan on. It seems to do it on its own... based on what though who knows. It seems in this case, always on is kind of BS isnt it?

The stock 7800 drivers are not good at all for OC though... unless that changed and I didnt hear about it.... Im using X-treme G Mobile force... uh whatever the lastest version. I dont know the number offhand.

    Hey all,

I am really hoping someone can help me. I don't know what's going on but my video card is really acting up... or I should say my fans.

At first my problem was that my fan was not running enough to keep the gpu cool, even when I had the always run fan option on. Mind you, this was when I was just IDLE in Windows. The system (whatever control it) seems telo just let the 7800 get way too high before the fan finally kicks on.

I use the X-Treme G drivers, the latest ones I believe, and I have been overclocking to 350/880. I actually do not game that much on my laptop, and when I do it was only for WoW mainly. My laptop is for school mostly. But anyone since the fan not cooling it right was worrying me I have turned off the Overclocking... and it's still giving me problems. The system is just letting it get way too hot... and THEN the fan kicks in and cools it, when it's at about 81c. Can I do something to fix this? Could I need to reinstall my drivers?

I do not know what aspect of Windows watches the temps and kicks the fan on so I do not know what can be done to fix it.

    Thank you.

I cant find a download for that program odd as thay may sound!

I did turn off the always run fan option and am just seeing what it does. It seems to kick on when it needs to... I guess its ok. I dont like that it goes into the 70s before it cools itself down though.

Is there a way to save OC profiles kind of like color profiles so I can just right click on the NV taskbar and load up a oc profile?

Guys I could really use some input. My system is letting my GPU get into the RED before the fan cools it down. And this just in WINDOWS. I am not even playing a 3D app. I have even turned off my Overclocking and it's doing this. What could be wrong?

You know, I have the same GPU.....my idle temps will jump up to around 80-82. Only then will the fans kick on. The funny thing is that during gaming, my temps are actually LOWER than when I'm surfing the net. When I interrupt from a game, my temps are usually no greater than 70 deg.

That is weird. We have an idential system it looks like. What drivers are you using and what are you OCed to?

    Maybe mine is fine....

I'm using the most recent X-Treme G drivers.....the over clock is real close to yours.....I'm not at the laptop right now, so I cant be sure.

Do you leave you OC settings always on or only when you need it?

I can provide my opinion - I overclock my X700 all the time.

When I go into a game, I load one of my overclocking profiles (depends on the game, some I only like a small overclock, other more demanding ones I go to higher speeds, and some I don't overclock at all). Once I'm done playing, I have a "Default" setting, and I just switch to that. It produces slightly less heat, and is the safest.

Do you know if you can make little OC setting saves on Nvidia cards? It would be great ti just right click the Nvidia taskbar icon and goto some menu and change settings. Right now I have to go into the control panel to nvidia, then manually overclock with the sliders. Takes a few moments. :) Not the end of the world but a presaved setting would still be nice.

I totally agree. I have to do the same thing. It lets me save profiles, but doesn't save the clock and memory settings. Chaz man...help us out! :p

The bad thing is, that you never really get consistent clock speeds that way either...every time i manually overclock my system ,it gives me different speeds. Truth be told, I technically don't really NEED to OC the card to play BF2, but I'm one of those "if it can be faster, I want it" types.

Here's something that maybe you guys can help me with. Last night, I ALT+TAB out of a BF2 session to go manually OC my 7800 (it started in stock settings) Well, while it was testing the settings, I got a BUNCH or static looking feedback on my display.....I ALT+TAB back to the game and ended my session...when I returned, the static was gone and I didn't see it come up again...........could this have been because i had the game running in the background?? It just spooked me for a second.

it might have been what is known as artifacting..this is when the GPU starts acting funky since it a) cant handle the heat, or b) cant handle the speed

also, overclocking while IN a game already...cant be good for the system. overclock first, then play games...in that order :)

Ah, pb to the resue again!! Thanks man, I appreciate the quick feedback. I assumed it was because the game was already running...as it hasn't given me any problems since

no prob...i would really recommending overclocking, when nothing is playing (no games, movies..etc..)
