I know this topic has probably been covered, but I can't find it in the searches for the life of me. Hopefully someone can help.

I have an ASUS M50sv-b1, 9500M GS (See sig), installed 174.74 drivers and things seem to be running well. However, I was looking at OC for this and can't figure out if it's safe because of this:
    Idle temp: 60
    3dMark load temp: 85
That's a 25 degree jump at load! Maybe it's because I'm used to desktop gpus, but that seems like a big leap, plus 85 seems high to me...Does anyone know whether that's normal or a problem on this driver/system?
Also, what's a safe temp to hit if I OC? Some forums say 75-85 is high, others have their normal non-oc'ed temps at 100!

    I`ll recite my poem now:
-Raise the back of the laptop
-Keep it on a solid surface, not on fabric, not on the lap when gaming
-Consider a notebook cooler if you want to OC.
-85C for the GPU is ok, 90C and above is cause for concern.
-the 174.x series run cooler than others, but as you already have them,it`s covered.
Ask other users with the same laptop as your what temps they`re getting.
The Asus G1S for example hits 95C under load and for them it`s normal, according to Asus support.
Other laptops can`t stand more than 85C.

    85 is ok...cool
90+ is cause for concern...like under normal settings (ie. there's something wrong with the system) but fine for OC,
    or
like just in general for gpu damage (ie. don't OC over this temp)

In relation to your last comment, does anyone know if the M50sv has a different heat range/tolerance like the G1S? Maybe I'll post that on the ASUS forums.

shouldnt the 9500gs run cooler because its a smaller manufacturing process?

It runs pretty much the same way as the 8600M GT DDR2 version.
It`s not DDR3,so it does not run as cool. Nor does it OC so well. But it`s still a good card.
I`d sugest making a thread in the ASUS forum asking people their temps.

Might just be the location of your laptop, such as the surrounding room temperature being too warm.

A little OT but did Nvidia discontinue the 9500m GS? The 9600m GS replaced it right? However i think they are still releasing the 9500m G for use with sli and geforce boost

Exactly. Most people tend to miss this all important point. The surrounding air temperature plays a major role in determining the temps. of components like CPU and GPU.

Mine never goes over 70. Usually around 63 in the middle of a game after a couple of hour of play.

My Acer 6920G idles at 46 degrees Celcius with ambient room temperature about 24 degrees Celcius. Everything is stock (including the Acer drivers for the video card).

    GPU-Z: G84 M rev. A2, ForceWare 175.61.
