The HP HDX18t offers only the 9600GT 512MB. Should I wait to see if they get a better choice in? I don't want to spend more than $100, $150 if it's a huge difference. So I guess the 9800GT/GS/GTS is what I want to look for?
I would like to get this laptop before the end of the year though...
Thanks!

It won't happen. If you want an "affordable" (<$2k) high end card, there's the following:
Qosmio F55-Q504 - 9700m GTS
ASUS G Series G50VT-X2 - 9800m GS
Gateway P-7801u - 9800m GTS
Sager 5793 - 9800m GTS
I can't think of any others.
Edit: "It won't happen", meaning that the notebook is more set up by HP as a media pc, not a powerful gaming machine. HP isn't looking for that market with this product. -
ASUS N80 with 9650M GT 1 GB Vram DDR2 - $859 if u get the coupons

Another thought. Even if one of the premium cards is added as an option later, it will be at least a $200 upgrade over the 9600.
Oh, and the 9800m GT will never be an option, as Nvidia has ceased its production for new models. -
Go with one of the 9800M notebooks. They're not much more and it's a huge upgrade.
-
1)they are "reserved" for high end laptops A.K.A. Voodoo series
2)they cost more then "150$ more"

Take a look at the Acer Aspire 8930 series, a direct competitor to the HDX18, with a similar 16:9 18" screen with 1080P and Blu-Ray options and options for a 9700M GT.

^Well that's way out of my price range. I will be able to get the HDX18t under $1300 soon hopefully, as I did to $1282 with P8600, 3GB Mem, and 250GB 7200rpm as upgrades, unfortunately I took too long to decide and the 30% off has expired. If not, easily under $1400...

If you only have that much to spend, then bad luck.
Your only option is the G50VT-X1, but thats it. -
