Hi, noob here. I've been looking at getting a Pavilion DV5( link to what's available in Australia), and I'm almost sold, except for the Nvidia issue with certain cards overheating.

Been doing a bit of digging, and from what I can read, the 9600M GT is a G96, and the most up to date information I've read says that it isn't affected by this problem. Is there any info to the contrary?

    Many thanks!

The only source I have seen that shows the 9XXX series as bad is the inquirer.

The Inquirer says chips G92 and G94 and that only includes all the 9700 and 9800 M series.

No. 9XXX can be a 9600M GT for example, and that's not the case.

I bought this note, chip is G96, and it is not affected (yet :))
Idle temperature: CPU 38-42C, GPU 46-51
I played only GTR 2 and boiling point, GPU achieved 75C maximum.
But I raised the back of the laptop and room temperature is not so high.

I don't think it's part of the bad batch of cards but I've seen some users reporting relatively high temperatures on here. I guess they're not too crazy but higher than I would like.

9500m gs is essentially a rebranded 8600GT if I recall correctly.

It is basically impossible to tell whether your graphics card will die or not. Some people have had so-called defective Nvidia chips for over a year now with no issues. While without a doubt many of the chips are failing, it certainly doesn't mean they all are.

Buy the laptop you want. If the GPU fails, then that's what the warranty is for.

Hey guys---- I'm getting an HP dv7t equipped with a 9600m gt.... Anyone have this graphics card? I was wondering how satisfied people are with it..... I think i will be satisfied as i am upgrading from a dell latitude d600 with an integrated 32mb video card! I still play wolf:ET on this card and I have fun with it, but obviously I run it on low settings..... I am not expecting to play games like crysis or anything, but would enjoy playing modern games... ( CoD 2 &4, Battlefield 1942 & 2, quake 4)...

I'm new to the notebook forums btw, and am enjoying it! thanks for your interesting and informative posts!

that graphic card should play them with no problem. I think it should play any game right now.

    i love the 9600m gt...
    bioshock on mostly high
gears of war on extrememly good settings...
    supreme commander forged alliance on...medium

    meets everyone of my expectations...
don't expect it to play crysis on high...most modern cards can''t even do that...
but you can play it...thats all you need...have fun

Can't seem to find this info anywhere, but what is the normal operating temperature range for the 9600M GT?

The operating temperature depends on the laptop. If yours is under ~85*C under full load, I wouldn't worry about anything.

I'm on my 9600M GT right now and I have yet to have any sort of heating issues with it while gaming for long periods of time.
