I am in process of getting myself a new laptop and my bigest problem is graphics..
One of requirements is battery life of at least 2+h while watching a movie.. would 9800M be able to handle it or I should better stick with 9600??
Also weight of PSU.. I hear it could be twice as heavy as with 9600 laptops.. is that true??
-
depends on which model you getting. my NP5793 can last 2 hours of movies. max brigness, wifi on etc.
-
Usually the weight of the notebook is more w/ the higher end graphics cards due to the higher heat output(bigger heatsinks) and bigger chassis.
-
U see 3kg or 3.3 kg laptop makes small difference, where as 3kg + 1kg or 3.3kg + 3kg makes a big difference when u need to carry that around...
PS.. I am looking into 15.4" laptops... -
Depends, do you plan on doing any higher end gaming? If so the 9800 series is more adequate to your needs. If you are just watching movies and using multimedia programs than the 9600 series would be more within your range, and should provide adequate battery life. There is also the 9700 series which provides a balance of both worlds, currently toshiba is the only one offering the 9700... at least to my knowledge.

As far as 15.4" notebooks go, only one offers the 9800 series at the moment, the Sager NP8660. It is heavy for a notebook in its class. And if weight is that much of a concern for you the 9600 series seems to be the better option. The power consumption of the 9800 series is much larger by comparison therfore needing a more adequate and, usually, a larger power brick. Aswell the 9600 should run movies with ease.
Edit: Sorry about double post, just saw your previous message. -
I will be gaming a lot on it, but I am not a guy that needs all settings to high all the time... it is more about gameplay rather than eye candy for me... while extra eye candy is always good..
Thing is that I travel a lot so portability is imoprtant... and therefore also the 2+h battery life and wasting time watching movies..
Edit: Can u give me the Toshiba model number with 9700M so I can check it out... -
Well the battery life will limit the card you will be able to get. For your needs it seems as though the 9600 series would be the best choice. However that being said wait for others to chime in and discuss their findings before making a decision.
And with that, I need to go to bed. Good luck with the laptop hunting. -

The card in the Asus G50V is the 9700M GT which is basically a glorified 9600M GT with higher clocks. The card on the Toshiba is the 9700M GTS which is totally different.
The 9700M GTS has 48 stream processors as opposed to 32 on the 9600 series and a 256 bit memory bus versus 128 bit. Thats what heimdall was alluding to i.e. in between the 9800 and the 9600. The 9700M GTS is the "true" in between card.
HyBry, I think for your needs the 9700M GTS would be the best option. Great bang for your buck too. -
From a quick look on Toshiba website, I saw only X300 with 9700GTS and weights 4.3 kg... nooo.. too heavy...
I think I will be going with 9650M GT, almost as fast as 9700M GT and is done in 55nm ( according to notebookcheck.com), so should be plenty cool and energy efficient... with enough power to game..
9600M series vs. 9800M series
