Higher 3Dmark score DO NOT translate into higher framerates.
3Dmark stresses every aspect of a system to produce a score.
Going from GDDR2 to GDDR3, assuming it's only 200-300MHz difference, will net you on average 5% performance increase in games, for these low end cards seeing as you wont be increasing details, resolution and AA in new games that will stress the cards bandwidth.
(and yes they are concidered low end when you compare to desktops)

These mid-range cards are limited by the interface. The numbers won't show much of a playable difference when sharper shadows, softer shadows, higher resolutions, anti-aliasing, object quality and shaders are concerned.
You will notice a fps boost (gddr3) or a slight decrease (gddr2) but the image quality will be practically identical. -
I'm sorry to resurrect this thread, but I'd like some opinions on a similar choice. I'm undecided between two laptops, one has the 9600m gt and the other 9650m gt. Detailed specs are as follows:
Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 2.0GHz, 4GB DDR2, 15,4" WXGA+,HDD 320GB,DVDRW,Intel 45PM chip,VGA 512MB NV9600M GT,Wifi,LAN,SD/MMC/MS,3xUSB,HDMI,1.3mpix webcam, weight 2,9kg, 9 cell battery, Bluetooth, FP
vs.
Intel Core2 Duo P8400 2.26GHz,4GB DDR2,15,4" WSXGA+,HDD 320GB,DVDRW,Intel 45PM chip,VGA 1GB NV9650M GT,Wifi,LAN,SD/MMC/MS,4xUSB,HDMI,E-sata,1394,2.0mpix webcam, weight 2,9kg,9 cell battery,Bluetooth,FP
The 9600 is DDR2, not sure about the 9650, but I think it's DDR2 as well. I'm also not sure if the P8400 would have 1066Mhz FSB versus 800Mhz FSB on the T5800 CPU and how much difference that would make in new games...
Anyway, would the difference between those two setups be worth ~250 in US dollar terms? I'm looking for best gaming performance, but if the difference is just marginal or quite small, then I'd prefer a cheaper option.
Thanks in advance to anyone who cares to reply to my question! -
Take the one with the P8400 CPU.
-
Care to elaborate why?
I need to convince myself that I'm making the right decision -
Better processor, better GPU, better screen resolution, better camera, E-SATA, etc.
-
Thanks, I can definitely see the pros of this choice now. But looking at it strictly from a performance-related hardware point of view (CPU and gfx card), would you still say it's worth it for gaming purposes?
-
The P8400 is more efficient than the T5800 and slightly more powerful and the 9650M GT is slightly more powerful than the 9600M GT(barely noticeable).
So yes, overall the second machine is better. -
Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendations, I chose the laptop with the P8400 and 9650m gt and am very happy with it
9600m GT vs 9650m GT
