    Ive been looking for a suitable mxm upgrade for my acer 5920g (currently using a 8600m gt). I wanted to use a 9600m gt, but since they are g96 cores there is no way currently for them to be compatable with the 5920g from acer.

    BUT...

    I heard somewhere that the 9650m gs is actually a juiced up g84 core, and looking through nvidias INF file I found this line.

    NVIDIA_G84.DEV_0408.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GS

    this seems to confirm that the 9650M GS is indeed a g84, and therefore a great upgrade choice for my laptop.

    Are these available for aftermarket purchase?

    advice please!

    If you find one... that would be great. What is your device subsystem ?

    The 9650M GS is the same as the 8700M GT. The only problem is finding the GPU alone to purchase. It is better than your GPU, but not that much. Look around though, maybe you will get lucky.

    The only place selling them I know of is Zepto, but they charge a fortune for them...

    *buzzzzz*
    Sorry, but you can't fit that into your Aspire 5920G.
    The 9650M GS may be on the G84 core, but it's on an MXM-III card. And MXM-III cards won't fit into the MXM-II slot in the 5920G.
    And besides, it's just a higher-clocked 8600M GT with GDDR3 video memory.

    True, people have been having issues upgrading to the 9600M GT, but that's less related to the G96 core and more related to a BIOS-lock issue. Try it if you've got the cash to throw around.

    And that being said, you can move to a Radeon HD 3650 with GDDR3 memory or a GeForce 9500M GS with DDR2 memory for a slight (like 5-10%) performance kick.

    The 9650M GS exists as a MXM II, get your facts straight before commenting please.

    ...Actually, I cant find any on zepto. I dont think I know how to look though...

    you need to contact them since they sell laptops on the website, not spare parts. If you send them an email they will tell you the price and everything.

    Please get YOURS straight, good sir.
    The 9650M G S is basically an 8700M GT core revision, and thus is an MXM-III.
    The 9650M G T is a higher-clocked 9600M GT, and is available from Mucro.Asia (a Zepto reseller) as a ridiculously expensive MXM-II card here.

    Evidence:
    Notebookcheck
    eBay listing for the 9650M GS MXM-III card

    Sorry for getting snippy about this.
    And besides, if you really wanted an 9650M GS, just OC your 8600M GT to its core and shader speeds. It'll be close enough.

    Hmm well..I guess there{s no hope for that then.

    Anyways, I've overclocked my 8600m gt to the max, and I want more performance...ideally about 30-50% more. Is there ANY upgrade that would get me this kind of improvement?

    Thanks for the help. Sorry if I sounded "snippy".

    No worries, classic77.
    Why the need for more performance, might I ask?
    Have you maxed out your RAM yet?

    EDIT: And just putting this out here, I believe that the 9600M GS might be compatible. Same core as the 9600M GT, just clocked lower. Get one with GDDR3 and bump those clocks up, and you've got your performance kick.

    Ive maxed out my DDR2...any more and I get artifacting.

    I was thinking about a HD3650, but like I said, I want at least a 30% increase.

    Would I even get this with a DDR3 3650 (overclocked afterwards of course)...or is a 9500M GS a better choice?

    I also like the sound of a 9600M GS...Didnt think that was possible with the BIOS lock.

    Thanks, any more opinions?

    Well Im my opinion I think:

    HD3670 = 9600gt
    HD3650 = 9600gs
    9500gs = 8600gt

    I would get either a 9600gt (the bad thing is that like you said it is not compatible) or an hd3650 both are good performing cards in my humble opinion.
