I'm planning on buying a laptop for 3d studio max and maya, the ones with quadros are too expensive, so I'm thinking about the G50/G71 with 9700M GT.

Will it be enough for those kind of programs?

Anyone using a 9700M GT with those programs can give me any tips, info, softmodding it to quadro, etc?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm moving this to the gaming & graphics cards forum, since the questions are not specific to ASUS.

Well, I was specifically asking for the Asus G50/G71, but works anyway for me.

And the 9700M GS? because here the G71 is listed with the 9700M GS.

    Depends how hard-core you are.

I would recommend a 9800m series as minimum. Which is PERFECT (for you) that the G50Vt will be equipped with the 9800m GS (if you have to buy asus). The G50Vt A1 and A2 versions will be out soon enough.

Or you could get a sager. They have the very best performance laptops

I'm from Europe, and there are no Sager here.

I like the Asus G71V because it has a nice screen ( WUXGA which is a must for 3d work ), blu ray, 4gb ram, T9400 and 9700M GS? ( I'm not sure, because someplaces it's listed with GT and other places with GS )

I could wait for the new G70SG that has the 9800GTS but I don't know when will it be released? next month? next year? and also it's more expensive.

The lenovo W700 and HP 8730W have not been released yet here, but they'll probably be much more expensive too.

I run autocad and matlab on my laptop (see sig) and they are fine. Cad is more processor and RAM intensive and a low end GPU copes. The 9800 series is more than capable of hadling it.

Is CAD and other 3D work more CPU intensive? I've always thought it was GPU accelerated.

Not exactly. There's no Sager in Europe, but there are Clevo resellers.
