    I recently bought a 970m for my m17x r4, and i will receive it in afew days, but i am wondering, can the 970m currently max out any game with no msaa, with resolution 1920x1080, my display is 1600x900 but i will soon upgrade it. my card as of now is a 7970m.

    Depends on what kind of frames you want to get when "maxing out."

    It can run the vast majority of games at high or ultra settings at 1080p while maintaining 60fps or more. Certain games (like Witcher 3) are just too demanding for ultra settings, but most of the ones I play are just fine with high settings.

    the 970m is around 50% more performant than the 7970m, stock vs. stock. u can potentially overclock the 970m to 980m stock performance, that would then result in around 75-80% more performance than your current 7970m at stock :) as far as ive seen, fullHD, especially without any AA should be handled quite well by the 970m, no matter which game were talking here. u can head over to notebookcheck to get an overview on game benchmarks with different mobile gpus :)

    You can't max and have 60fps with newer games, but you won't have to sacrifice a lot to achieve 60fps with higher settings. Some games are the exception for different reasons that might include bad coding, but other than that, you should have decent performance.

    970m is the third most powerful mobile GPU available, andas others mentions, you can overclock it to 980m levels.

    The 970m is a great card and I'm sure you'll love it. It's a pretty good upgrade over the 7970m.

    I thought the 675MX was a good upgrade over the 7970M. 970M should be a fantastic upgrade over the 7970M. Welcome to mobile gaming without AMD BS.

    Though I've read a few postings on different forums complaining NVidia drivers to be less stable lately, but I haven't noticed them.

    So I ended up finding a m18x r2 for a decent price, 7970m x2 is the extra weight and hassle worth it, cause I could possibly sell my m17x r4 and put a single 970m in the m18x for now. Maybe the extra weight and all isn't good though. And I feel it would get hotter. Is dual 7970m a major gain over single 970m?

    I'd better not try 2x7970m. Too much heat and even if performance is slightly better, just not worth it. In addition to that, 970m supports DirectX 12, and also with a single GPU you don't get any SLI support/microstutter problems.
    IMHO, it's just too many arguments in favor of 970m :)

    Definitely 970m will be less of a headache to deal with. Just wanted to comment that 7970m should also support DX12, but I would still recommend going 970m and OC.

    Modern games, as in ones released in this PS4 era? Not even a scant majority .

    On the contrary, barring a few intense titles (such as Witcher 3), most games released since the PS4 can be run at high settings at 1080p with 60fps or so. The PS4 was launched two years ago, lest people forget.

    Ultra? Not so much.

    Well OP did want to max out (except for AA) games and get 60 FPS :rolleyes:

    Perhaps, but that isn't the point of contention here. I'm saying that the vast majority of the games released over the past two years can be played at high or ultra settings (but usually high) at 1080p while hovering around the 60fps range.

    Now, going forward, that will obviously change. And the less demanding games can often be maxed out - remember, few of the games released in those two years are of the AAA, Witcher 3/Crysis 3 type.

    Although I can agree that if you start thinking about "maxing out" games at all, only the 980M should be considered.

    No. Get a single 980M then.

    Agreed. High 60 FPS is not the same as Ultra 60 FPS.

    7970M CF = 125% (best case scenario with perfect scaling)
    970M = 100%
    980M = 130%

    970M also has a lower TDP than a single 7970M (80W vs 100W), much less two of them. It's a great perf/$ and perf/watt chip. The 980M is way too expensive where I am, in the order of a few hundred dollars extra.

    How the hell is a 675mx an upgrade to a 7970m, stock vs stock the 675mx is about 40% slower though it depends on the game. The 7970m is performance wise on par with a 680m (and that one is a lot faster than a 675mx).

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-675MX.82580.0.html
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-7970M.72675.0.html

    AMD cards run fine as long as you don't have to run them in buggy Enduro mode (which can give you a performance drop of about 30%). And the same counts for crossfire, so in this case I would always take a 970m or 980m instead of two 7970m's

    Using the 970M 6GB for a year now in my modded P170 SM and I play all of my games in Ultra at 1080p, except witcher 3 (high), with excellent fps all the times and I didn't even overclock it.

    The thing I really like is about the temperature that never goes above 60/65 degree, even after playing for hours.

    Yup, 970M runs cool and eats the 880M any day... Mine hits 70C sometimes but that's on auto fans in like BF4 lol..
