Hey guys, my old desktop had a 9800 Pro 128 and my new laptop has a Go7400 512 (256 dedicated).

Im just wondering how i can expect the Go 7400 to compare when playing games. Should it at least be able to play everyhting that my 9800 Pro could?

For example HL2 - Played alright on my desktop.... but had a bit of slowdown unless i put the graphics down a bit and overclocked the CPU. Same with CS Source

My desktop had P4 2.8, 1GB ram, my Laptop has Core2Duo 1.83, 1GB ram if that helps any.

    Thanks

Yes HL2 will run fine on the 7400go. The CPU is alot faster which helps the 7400go. The 9800pro is faster for older games and about the same for new games.

Well the 9800 pro has far more memory bandwitdh, shader and vertex operations.

It could handle more shaders and at higher resolutions.

The 9800 is still more powerful than your 7400.

Of course it has older technology and doesn't support SM 3.0, etc...

    ^^^

What he said. The 9800 is a very fast card, and will be faster than the 7400 in older games. But on new games, the 9800 may not even play them while the 7400 will, or the 9800 will be hamstrung by having to do some effects on the CPU instead of on the card. You shouldn't be too disappointed with the 7400 though, especially if you're running at lower resolutions on the laptop than you do on the desktop. The resolution makes a ton of difference.

The 9800 Pro was an awesome card back then, just like the Geforce 4 TI series. In fact, they still spank current modern onboard GPUs.

if you are looking for pure RAW hardware power, then the 9800pro wins, but if u are looking for compatibility/ability to turn on new effects (even on a low scale) then the Go7400 wins....so either way its a win/win situtatuib

Aah, radeon 9800pro, how i miss thee. I played oblivion and F.E.A.R. on that badboy. But yes, it should be more powerful, since 9800pro>mobility x700>go7400. The processor is better on you lappytop though

using the 9800 PRO as my primary card since im a poor college student.

it is awesome. playing rise of nations on high @ 1024x768
    battle for middle earth 2 medium-high @ 1024x768 (2xAA)
    half life 2 maxed out @ 1024x768 (2xAA)
oblivion on medium @ 1024x768 (no bloom or AA)

just bought stalker, so we'll see how that runs
so even for this aging card, it is still very powerful, imo.

best $40 investment i've ever made!

    Ahhh No

I have 9800 Pro on my desktop and 7400 Go on laptop.

7400 Go > 9800 Pro 128 in every way. I can run Sims2 with all medium setting on my laptop silk smooth but I can barely run low resolution on Sim2 with similar resolution.

Newer games run slightly better on the Go7400 in many cases but in titles like HL2 the 9800 will easily win out, so it's hard to actually clearly say that either is definitively better.

I tried the same thing with F.E.A.R. and 9800 pro and a mobility x700, and the 9800 pro was better- I thought the x700 was better than the 7400.
