Can a single 9800M GT handle Doom 3, CoD4, The Orange Box, and a few other games on high settings? Will these games run completely smooth? Or should I go after the GTX?

Can it handle Crysis on some lower settings?

Yes a 9800M GT should be fine.

the 9800M GT is one of the fastest GPUs on the market... it can easily handle Crysis and CoD4.

The GTX is about 15-20% faster... but its up to you if you want to pay the premium to get the fastest card.

9800m GT basically a 8800m GTX, though a die shrink. You will handle those games perfect maxed settings 1920x1200.

I have the 9600m GT and I can run Crysis on medium with shadow off fairly smoothly. As for the others, you can pretty much go either high or max out on them.

You will max res and settings for those games easy with that card.

What sort of resolution will you be playing at? I can max everything 'cept AA on COD4, playing at my native resolution of 1680x1050. Doesn't seem to lag even with AA on, but I also can't really notice that much of a difference in clarity, so well.

Crysis at medium is very playable. High may be pushing it a little at this resolution. Still playable, though, if not quite a thoroughly smooth experience.

HL2 and Doom 3 are so old that a 9800M GT could probably play them maxed at 2560x1600, if they supported it :p
