Hi i just bought a Gateway FX 7805u

I am wondering about the stock performance of the GeForce 9800M GTS 1 Gig DDR3 card in this laptop.

I want to know if it is SAFE and beneficial to do something to make sure it is running tip top (overclocking smart and necessary?)

What is my best route and also if someone has a detailed step by step of how to do it that would be appreciaited as I have never overclocked or anything of the such (always scared to mess something up!!)

Also, how does the 9800M GTS 1 Gig DDR3 hold up to other cards?

Chaz seems to be the man around here so I hope he will chime in as well
    Thanks

The 9800M GTS GDDR3 is a pretty good card. What games are you playing? OCing can be beneficial and give you a few extra FPS but you have to monitor your temps. Have you done any stress tests on your GPU?

No tests. whats a stress test? CPUID says GPU at idle runs about 40-45 and during gaming 70-80.

I play all the latest games - FEAR2/Crysis Warhead/Riddick/Vegas 2/COD4 - Any new FPS that comes out and is good I get

You should be safe overclocking your GPU. I'd recommend using Nvidia System Tools 6.03. All you have to do is gradually increase your core, memory, and shader clocks until you start experiencing issues. You should be able to get clocks of around 700/900/1700 and you will definitely notice a boost in graphics performance. :)

You can probably find more accurate comparisons searching NBR. Notebookcheck is good for a rough idea of how things compare but they don't fully list the specs of each machine they use to calculate those scores, which makes them a little less reliable.

Thanks so would it be ok to set it at 700/900/1700 right off the bat?
700 is core clock (from stock 600)?
900 is shader clock (from stock 800)?
1700 is memory (from stock 1500)?

No, don't jump that high. Read any basic guide to OCing (even CPUs). Go up slowly in increments and do quick stability tests in between (make sure you don't BSOD or overheat). Monitor temps along the way. Do a final long stability test after your highest OC.

no, chances are you'll kill it. just move it up by small increments, you can start with 625core 1550shader 850mem, and move them up by 10mhz every time, check you temps and use furmark to test for artifacts. what ever you do, do not get you gpu above 90c.

Thanks..is Riva Tuner easier to use for a newb like me instead of nvidia system tools 6.03?

Also, I have CPUID-HWMonitor...how do I save or know what my max temps were during a gaming session? Is there a file or something?

Ive just been checking immediately after a gaming session and the temp will obviously drop a bit within that 10 seconds ; (
