I took a look at a few "reviews" of these cards separately, but not one that pits them head to head. From what I see, it appears the performance is pretty similar.

The 260 has almost twice the stream processors, and will perform 20% + faster on average.

Performance is not exactly pretty similar, and using 3dmark05 is not really a good indicator of performance.

The 260M GTX is a good deal stronger, and if you compare the 9800M GS with the underclocked 260M GTX on the Asus G51 it will still outperform it on every game you play.

I had a 9800M GS overclocked to GTS speeds, and so far the 260M GTX underclocked has given me better performance across the board.

The GTX 260m performs similar to the 9800m GTX.

    9800m GS < 9800m GTS < 9800m GT < 9800m GTX

The 260m will outperform the 9800m GS regardless. ;)

As Nvidia often does, the GTX 260m ( as well as the GTX 280m ) is just a die shrink and an overclock of the 9800mGTX

Yup, 3dmark05 is pretty much an obsolete benchmark. Even 06 is getting a bit old, as it only tests DX9. For DX10 performance, Vantage should be used... If it weren't for the way Futuremark charges for Vantage (and requirement of Vista) it would have probably already replaced 06 as the standard bench.
