I didn't want to post this in "What Notebook should I buy?" as this doesn't directly relate to that, it's more of a gaming question.

I like playing games at Native resolutions, and maxed out if possible. Would you guys go for a 9800m GS with Native Res. 1680x1050, or a 9800m GTS with Native Res. being 1920x1200?

    I play mainly FPS' (CSS, TF2, HL2, COD4, etc.)

I'd take the 9800m gs laptop. 1920x1200 on a 9800m gts is pushing things not to mention in another year you probably won't be able to play most new games at that res.

I don't mind playing at non-native res, so id go for the gts.
better graphics card, better res screen, obvious enough for me.

Depends what you are into really imo...
if you are going to play graphic intensive games, probably go for the gts.
if you are going to go for cpu intensive games like starcraft 2, etc... get the laptop with the better cpu, I have a suspicion I know what laptops you are looking at. also cpu and ram help with day to day processes as well...
    gotta take everything into consideration

I'm actually looking at the Asus G50VT-X2 and the Gateway 7801u FX. The Asus has a better CPU, but not by much. I can always upgrade either CPU's later, that's why I wasn't listing those specs. If you guys think that I will be able to play most games to come in the next year or so at Native res. with max/close to max settings with the 9800 GS then I'll go for that (Almost $300 cheaper). As far as the native resolution goes, I can tell the difference when playing games in non native resolution, as it isn't as sharp (Except Crysis, I can't tell a difference :S)

Well if all else is the same, get the better one with better stats...

Odds are we are talking about price difference though too.

The 9800m GS and 9800m GTS are the exact same card with the GS being clocked slightly lower. The GTS IS better, but figure about a 10% difference.

While they are both excellent cards, neither the 9800m GS nor the 9800m GTS is going to push the latest games at 1920x1200. 1680x1050 is more realistic, but even that resolution will strain these cards for certain games.

It's also worth considering screen size.

Lots of people seem to furiously strive for the highest resolution possible in a laptop, but for me personally, squinting at a 1920x1200 desktop on a 17" or smaller screen isn't my idea of a great way to spend my time.

well, you can always use larger fonts...

1920x1200 looks OK on 17" screens.

15" 1920x1200 screens are overkill IMHO.

    Get better glasses :p

But seriously its how good your eyes are and if you like to multi-task windows on your screen. I check both of those so I got a WUXGA+ even though I know most FPS I play will be at 1680x1050 or lower.

Plus I play Eve-online and like to window the game on the side so I can browse the web at the same time.

But if you have bad eyes...don't get WUXGA+ on a notebook unless its that giant HP HDX laptop.

The 15 inch is the 1680x1050, and the 17inch is the 1920x1200. Im not worried about that as a friend of mine has an HP thats a 15.4 inch that is 1920x1200, and I can use it just fine.

    What is your price cap?

You can get a Sager NP5793 for as low as $1400 IIRC.

    It's all personal preference really.

Honestly, I think the ASUS is the better deal in this case as to me the 1920x1200 screen and slightly better clocks of the GTS are not worth the extra price tag.

Both those cards should be able to handle all those games perfectly well even at 1900x, gts is powerful for sure but I was trying to get more about future gaming needs.

Commodore, where can i get the sager for 1400?

Also I have another question for everyone. With a graphic card like 8800m and 9800m do you need a notebook cooler when running games? Because I know a friend who has a HD3650 and his laptop pretty much overheats all the time when playing game.

    http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np5792-np5793-custom-laptop-built-clevo-m570ru-p-2276.html?wconfigure=yes

But once you start adding WUXGA+(which I suggest since it has a Blu-ray player) and the T9300...the price jumps a little over $1500. I think its a great deal and from what I hear the M570RU cools pretty good.

EDIT: actually the WUXGA+ is standard but it does not come standard with any OS so you have to add that option as well.

I would recommend him the P-7811FX if they still made the thing...hell, I would have gotten it.

The P-7801u was not much of an improvment for the price increase.

Yeah, Ive been looking for this laptop for a while. I called about 15 Best Buy's and even called the corperate store, still with no luck. I guess I'll go ahead and get the Asus G50VT-X2, Because from looking at the X1 from best buy the build quality is awesome. Thanks alot for your help guys! I really hope I like 1680x1050 :D
