A 22-year-old gamer has spent
$26,500 (£13,700) on an island that exists
only in a computer role-playing game (RPG).
The Australian gamer, known only by his
gaming moniker Deathifier, bought
the island in an online auction.
The land exists within in a RPG which allows
thousands of players to interact
with each other. The virtual island includes
a gigantic abandoned castle and
beautiful beaches which are described as ripe
for developing beachfront property.
According to http://www.gameusd.com ,a game
money price research site, this is almost
the biggest transaction in the virtual
world untill now.
"This is a historic moment in gaming history,
and this sale only goes to
prove that massive multi-player online gaming
has reached a new plateau,"
someone said.

That's not the right use of the word historic, unless it also means stupid.
-
Yeah, I think it's lame also. But check out the stuff that's on eBay nowadays. My lil sister's into the "Maple Story" game (since she's out of school now). There's imaginary crap on eBay that's selling up in the thousands. I dont know why, I guess it's for lazy people with extra money lying around. Lazy, meaning they dont want to work for the extras, just buy it.
-
smart, think about the advertising revenue with all those people passing through...
-
That guy needs help....right now. Where did he get the money from?
-
sad, very sad. Not to sound old fashioned or stiff, but he could have bought a college education with that kind of money...he could certainly do with a lesson in finance/economics.
-
yea...i agree....i think that's a big waste of $26,500...u could also get a car if u wanted with that much money
-
what you have to ask yourself is: How long will it take before i get bored of this RPG and realize i wasted $26,500 on something that really isnt there!

I agree, but it's better if you learn how to take advantage of the situation. some pple are making a living selling d2 items on ebay. I personally have made 1 k off of d2 items.
-
what's d2 items??...Diablo 2??
-
Man this gives a whole new meaning to "Can I sell you the Brooklyn Bridge?"
I can create a virtual bridge and fools around the world will buy it.
26,000 bucks for zeros and ones seems really stupid to me. -
lol...but if he wants to do it...let him...it's his choice , ya no
...lol
J/K!!!!!! -
oo ooo i'll buy the brooklyn bridge lol J/K but i know about the d2 thing its kinda confusing
figured i'd revive an odd topic -
Man oh man, some peopler are so darn gullible, especially gamers who tend to make rash, impulse purchases just for the heck of it. People can make tons of cash off these suckers.
-
...Lame...lame indeed
-
IMHO if you spend more time online in your RPG life than in your real life, which this guy probably does, why not? You will probably use it more than a real item anyway...
Plus, 26.5K and you get your very own island! You can't get that deal in the real world! -
In england we have an expression for this :"A FOOL AND HIS MONEY ARE SOON PARTED!"
-
This is about the stupidest piece of news I have heard in a while.
I really don't understand the concept of buying favors in a game with real money.
Crazy!

Lets not assume. What if he is a multi billionaire who has nothing better to waste his money on?
And sometimes people buy gaming items on Ebay because they have worked in real life and want to relax by shortcutting into powerfulness in their games. (not me)
And yea, it is dumb to fork out 26.5k for a virtual island. -
i sold my world of warcraft account for $350 back then! =D
-
origin what were the specs of char

I am not that suprised. After seeing a site selling Guild Wars money, and considering it for a second before slapping myself, I believe that a much more hardcore gamer would spend that kind of money, though, you have to wonder; if someone is willing to spend that much, they must play that game a lot, so, where did they get the money to buy the friggin' island. Can you say bad credit risk?
