A few years ago I bought starcraft + broodwar box set, do they share one CD key?

    I can't remember.

I am trying to find my brood war CD key, and I have both cases.

The original starcraft case has the starcraft CD key on the back. Where is the brood war cd key? It isn't on the back of the brood war case.

Also- do i need both original discs to install brood war, or just the brood war disc? (for online / lan play)

Brood war never had it's own CD key. So yes, all you need is the brood war disk and it will work fine, even on battle.net

You need to install the first disk first, then broodwar, then to play on battle.net you just need the broodwar disk in the drive when you launch the game.

    Awesome.

is there any way to get onto battle.net without the disc in the drive? I have a laptop here, lets be serious. I can't bring the disc around with me all the time in case I want to play a quick game.

    Edit:

Answered my own question, blizzard no longer requires the CD to be in the drive to play the game. It may just work with the latest patch, but they detail a few steps to take here:

Yea I was just remembering that. You can now register your starcraft CD key and download the game from battle.net, and download/play it without ever needing a CD.

Funny thing is that since Broodwar never had a cd-key, all you have to do is register your starcraft cd and you get broodwar for free!!(only if you download it through battle.net though).
