IL2 Sturmovik, no server browser though - you're on your own for finding multiplay

Are you after something realistic? Or something more arcadey?

Aces High is a pretty good free WWII flight sim, although it also includes some other vehicles like PT boats and ground-based turrets.

You can get a 2-week free trial to play the huge arena battles, and if you decide not to pay in the end, you still have unlimited access to the free-to-play smaller skirmish modes, which I believe is capped at 6 players, though don't quote me on that.

if u like a more arcadey one , Tom Clancy's HAWKS is nice... another one would be heroes over europe which is more realistic.... for a super realistic one , Lock On and IL2 are good options...

IL-2 by far best choice. Lots of online activity.

Play Combat Flight Simulator 1 from 1998 :p apart from low res .jpg autogen and buildings, the flight models and physics are done remarkably well, even for today i'd say. There's also a whole page dedicated to mods, it was so easy to mod it that there's literally a whole world that you can add on to it. I highly recomend the new flight model package, introduces AI aircraft and every aircraft including AI only ones are redone, so they probably meet todays standards, even back then that game actually had primitive lighting and reflections. I played it up until 2007 :p

Edit:i meant player flyable AI aircraft, also there is a mod for player controllable turrets in B-17's, Stuka's (back gunner) Ju-88's, B-24J's, and He-111's (Heinkel), also Dornier-17's
The game was even featured as a short blip in a Windows 98 commercial :p

There's also European Air War that was top notch for the day, surpassed by IL-2, not sure if EAW even has online any more.

Combat Flight Sim 3 used to be good, IL2 is where it is at if you want a realistic FS.

Hawks and FoP are ok if you want arcady action

Crimson Skies was GREAT! I was always disappointed that they didn't make a sequel. I didn't care for the console version though. Still a great game if you can find it. I know I have a copy buried somewhere. I'll have to breatk it out. That would be a great game for netbooks even considering its system requirements.
