My dad has been a long time fan of the P.T.O. series of games, which covered the naval battles of WWII. He started on the SNES where it was just Japan and US, but has now gotten to PTO4 on the PS2 which covers everyone. Anyways, he's now wanting to get into something that's a little more inclusive, covering ground troops, naval battles, everything, and he wants it for PC. First and foremost, the machine is a three year old Compaq desktop with 256 RAM, a 2.6 Celeron, and 64MB Intel Extreme Graphics (maybe 2). So yeah, the game can't be a brand new game. I could probably get him to upgrade the RAM if it would mean running a good game, but obviously everything else is what it is. Beyond that, I think he would prefer to keep it a WWII era game. Also, I would hope there is a demo of the game so that he could try it out before he bought it. I'm not a huge fan of strategy games, TBS or RTS, so I don't really know which would be best. I would say TBS, but like I said, I don't know all that much about strategy. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

i dont really know the PTO. series .but do you mean games like comand and conquer ? C&C is availiable in different series .like the original through red alert and to the C&C generals series wish are full 3d and much more demanding .but the original and a few of the red alert types you should be able to run .

i know these arent WOII era games but i like them alot and it are the only one wish i could think of now

    Running on Intel Extreme 2?

I dunno, perhaps he can try Empire Earth, that's pretty easy on hardware.

the age of empires series, empire earth are good too. aoe has better graphics, but empire earth 2 has a scren where you can send troops a certain path. the mini map works well in sending troops a certain place and time. as well as seasons affect the tide of battle. all in all a great game, definatley worth the $49 I spent last year.

You want naval battles and ground troops, and it old
Let see, here is what I think of:
-Total Anihilation very old yet very good, not WWII though, it scifi but it good, very good
-Old C&C series, not WWII also but good
-Age of Empires 1 and 2 , not WWII but good
Though are the Build the base strategy games
Now is the Strategy games, no build base
-Brizkieg (maybe the name is wrong) this one is famous
That all I can think of for now.
The thing is, WWII strategy game dont have many great games, and I dont know about the PTO series also though I played lot of games.
    Hope this help

Yeah, PTO never really was a popular franchise. It was published by KOEI. He had to ask Gamestop to order PTO4 cause they had never heard of it and didn't have any in stock. But he absolutely loves the games. They're actually kind of interesting. You place troops and everything, and some battles you engage in in real time, others you just let your computer-controlled captains and so forth handle the battle. He religously plays the first on SNES to this day, it's probably the only reason he cares to keep it around. He doesn't get to play 4 too much cause I like to keep the PS2 with me at college a lot. And he can't find 2 or 3 anywhere to buy. I downloaded the Axis and Allies demo and have been playing it on my machine. It's not too bad, but I'm not sure it's what he's looking for. He's a very smart person and has been into deep strategy games all his life. He doesn't like games that take a few days to beat. It should ideally take more than a month to play and offer several different outcomes, which is why he loves the PTO series. He has a collection of old strategy box games that can be put together to create a larger board, and he used to fill up a garage with one game. He's hardcore. :)
Anyhow, keep the suggestions coming. I'm hoping to find him a good one. Any PS2 suggestions are welcome too.

Do you think there is anyway to add a video card?

Could probably get a PCI or AGP card for well under $50 that should handle most strategy type games.

Doubt it. Never had the computer open, but even if it were possible, I'm sure he wouldn't go for it. He doesn't even want to upgrade the RAM, but I'm trying to tell him that he should anyway, whether he plays a game on it or not.

you should look into some old conse emulation programs, I'm sure if you dig hard enough you'll br able to find all those old games, and they should work with the hardware you have

Yeah, I already have Snes9x on the machine with PTOII on it, so he's good there. Like I said, he was just looking for something more inclusive. That's why I also included console gomes in the suggestion domain. It doesn't have to be PC, but it's usually easier to find strategy games on PC.
