One of my all time favourite games that I have played since the Windows 98 days is BattleZone 2 (+ Forgotten Enemies and Fleshstorm Mods) and since moving to Windows 7 X64 I really thought I wouldn't be able to play this one anymore. I was even considering Dual booting XP SP3 for this one.
As usual the BattleZone community has not let us down because this patch allows it to run in Windows Vista / Windows 7 Battlezone II patch 1.3 Public Beta 5.1
Not only have the graphics / textures been improved (DX9), the sound is much better and there are more options to configure. Since you can't install this one directly into Windows 7, I just copied over my old XP install folder and then ran the update pointing it to the directory.
This may well be old news to some but I had no idea about this so I am posting here just in case anyone else also didn't already know. My laptop runs the game at only 700 fps+![]()
I just took a look at the improvements and additions, the list is absolutely huge. I think some of the most important additions are as follows:
What really amases me is the following which shows some serious dedication and support that goes above and beyond the call of duty.
EDIT:
Take a look here for a list of all known Battle Zone 2 Mods

Wow! Battlezone was one of my all time favourites! I had no idea people were stilling playing it with an active community? Might have to check this out again.
-
Windows 7 hasn't even been out for very long and already they have a patch that adds compatibility, DX9 and lots more. Battlezone2 will never die.
I mostly play instant action maps but I highly recommend the Fleshstorm Mod which is like a completely new game due to the detail of the new factions. The other mod I recommend is Forgotten Enemies but that one still has a few issues with the most recent patch.
If you are running Windows XP you have 100% compatibility with all of the Mods and PB3 though. -
This is welcoming news, but please remember that Windows 7 features XP Mode, in which selected applications will be run in a virtual XP environment for compatibility purposes.
-
I wonder how well XP mode functions for 3D intensive games as opposed to just applications though. -
Great news you got there sir! I really love Battlezone.

Hi! Ran across this forum on Google and it is the closest thing I've found on how to do this.
I just found a .iso of BZII from ages ago and am really excited. I loved the first one and want to play the second one.
I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit system.
I need to know how to install the program on Windows 7.
Any info on useful patches would be great too!
Thanks! -
As far as XP mode, I do not believe it supports DirectX, OpenGL, or any other type of 3D mode. It will fail. However, Virtual Box does support DirectX and OpenGL, but not sure how well it works, and you'll need your own XP license to use it. -
Well-I had no problems with a regular old install on windows 7 home premium. I just went into the properties of the setup.exe and put it to run in compatability mode for win 98/me. It worked just fine. I then applied the latest beta patch mentioned above and started playing. I was giddy with good memories.

Hi guys,
I'm a BZ2 fan too and I've recently find the disc but it doesn't work on 7. i've found that discussion on Google, but the patch file cannot be downloaded from the source. Somebody may help me? -
The download link no longer works because they have released a more recent patch I think. Battlezone II patch 1.3 Public Beta 6
-
Thanks for keeping this thread alive. I love this game and may fire it up again if I can find my CD!
-
I've a problem: the patch says that I need to install the game before installing it, but the game says that it isn't compatible with the SO. I've tried to go to BZCD>Setup>Setup.exe, but it doesn't open. Somebody has any solution for that?
Thanks in advance -
By the way, I also have Windows 7 X64 and I went into my BattleZone 2 CD, in the setup directory and ran it fine. Trying to the run the other setup.exe would not work. You should try again and if that still fails, try running it in compatibility mode. -
Those mods are so well done they seem like official expansions. Some of the original developers or team members of Battlezone 2 worked on some of those mods in their spare time apparently.
Edit: I just played Fleshstorm 2 instant battle and it was excellent. I played as the Swarm who are a faction that do not need to harvest, all of their ships look like living organisms similar to insects and their weapons seem to be mucus based. You can create structures that leech of the land giving you resources but you are vulnerable until you create some good defense guns since the Swarm has weak Armour. -
Iv just installed BZ2 and its working on windows 7 with the the latest beta patch, i think its v.6 and its working fine except for there is no weapon noises at all. All the units talking is there etc, but there are no weapon noises at all, just wondering if this is a known issue, or a windows 7 issue that cant be fixed, loving the game anyway, i remember playing it 10years ago.
Any help on this would be really appreciated thx in advance. -
Never heard of the no weapon noise issue, maybe try changing the sound options in game. Try reinstalling the latest Audio Drivers too. I think there is a ''play music from CD'' setting as well.
-
-
I don't have that issue but I am using beta patch version 5 so you could always do a fresh install and test out version 5 to see if you get the same sort of issues.
-
I guess i will try that, are you using windows 7 64 bit?
-
-
Ok i can't find a place to download beta 5, all i can find is the latest beta 6, as all the links have been updated to 6. Could you post a link where I could download beta 5?

Ok cool thx, il try it, this is the kind of sight i was looking for with the mods on as well

I have the EXACT same problem as "Runzolf"
I have no idea how to run the program when I click Set Up because the set up doesn't even open..help? -
hey guys sorry I'm not too terribly computer savvy so I apologize if this is not quite right with the lingo and file extensions but I was having a similar problem (I have a new comp with win 7 home premium and my old bz 2 disc)
My fix was to open the cd in Windows Explorer, right click on the setup.exe (the application file) and click on Properties. When that window opens up I selected the Compatibility tab and in the first box I selected the option of "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 98/ Windows Me)" I applied my changes, closed the properties and returned to the open cd in my Windows Explorer. This time I opened the file folder named "Setup" and in this folder there was another Setup.exe file (also an application) and when I ran it it proceeded to install BZ II on my computer without any error messages.
I hope this helps everyone and a big thank you to everyone who participated in the discussion earlier as it helped me get this far. -
Hi all.
I just stumbled upon this thread while doing some BZ2 googling and it got me thinking about getting BZ2 installed on my laptop. I had some really fond memories of this game and it's atmosphere, and wanted to make another pass at it with better hardware this time around
Running W7 x64 and the installation ran just fine. No problems encountered at all. Installed the latest beta patch (beta 6 I think) and maxed out all the graphics options under 1920x1080. This game is as great as I remembered it. This is the best FPS/RTS hybrid ever. Hands down!
My problem is sound. Not sure where to look, but it gets garbled and "muffled". Tried to enable 2D and 3D hardware, but got reverted to software. Maxed it to 32 channels, but the "debug" info at the top of the screen states I'm only using 4-6 "channels" out of 32. Anyone encountered anything similar or have any suggestions for what I might try to get the audio working properly?
I'd appreciate if anyone could comment on this
Cheers!

I think I solved the problem by selecting the specific sound driver instead of selecting "windows default" option. Seems to be working properly now.
Is there a way to remove the debug info from appearing on-screen? I keep looking at the FPS counter instead of the on-screen action
Cheers!

Hmm, links in OP are dead. Anyone have new links or access to these files?
edit: here's the patch: http://www.patches-scrolls.de/battlezone2.php
and found this for mods, not sure if it's complete: http://www.bz2md.com/smf/portal.php -

@ m0b5t4
Try running as admin and compatibility mode of Windows 98 or Windows 2000. -
I couldn't get it to install on Win7 Ultimate 64b until i tried copying the folder.
This is my folder after applying the 6.2 patch if someone needs it.

and thanks loads for these posts. was thinking about this game a few days ago and decided to revisit. -
Hey guys. I'm having trouble installing Battlezone 2 on Windows Vista 64 bit.
I have already tried running the setup.exe from the \Setup folder both with and without compatibility, and I've left the setup.exe to run for quite a while now, to see if it would just start working, but to no avail.
I was curious if anyone had a .rar (or any other format) of their Battlezone 2 directory that's already installed. I'm sure that the game will run fine, but I just can't get the setup to work for me.
Edit: Nevermind, as soon as I closed out Google Chrome, the setup.exe ran perfectly fine. I had a hunch a program running might be the problem...
A heads up to all Battlezone 2 fans who run Windows 7
