Hey guys,
I know AC Brotherhood isn't out for PC (yet?) but my girlfriend gave me the 360 version as a Christmas gift. I've heard nothing but good things from my friends and critics about the game but now I'm skeptical to start playing it because I don't know if I'll be able to understand the story since I never played the first two ACs. So what do you guys think, is AC Brotherhood new-player-friendly? Or should I play through the first two real quick before starting Brotherhood?
Thanks,
-

Play through the first 2. You definitley won't understand the story if you haven't played 2 yet, but 1 isn't really AS relevent but still follows the same story. I know its a hassle but it's worth playing through them to understand Brotherhood

Definitely play the first two before playing Brotherhood. While Assassin's Creed 2 has a little recap of the first game at the beginning, I would still recommend playing through the first one. It's a great game despite the criticisms it drew.
I actually like the first one more than the second. I found the combat to be too easy in AC2 and I enjoyed the setting more in the first game (1191 A.D. during the Third Crusade). -

The story is pretty important in the series, so try to play the first two.
The first one is way too repetitive, so just try to beat it as fast as you can. The second one improved a lot of things over the original, more mission variety, the story feels more involving and the "plataforming" aspect works better, with larger areas and taller buildings, etc. And try to play the PC version of AC2, it comes with the two DLC's for free, they add quite a bit of play time to the overall game. -
im wondering how long the campaign is in brotherhood.

I would think twice about getting Assassin's Creed 2 on PC because of the asinine DRM.
About the first game, play it at your own pace. It'll only seem repetitive if you try to beat it as fast as you can (as Gabe from Penny Arcade addresses in the second editorial: Penny Arcade - Nitpicking: Mass Effect, Part One). Honestly, it's a little rough around the edges, but it's a great game.
I feel like in trying to improve on the "problems" people had with the first, Assassin's Creed 2 actually overcompensated in areas. The assassinations themselves just feel insignificant because of the sheer number of them. I also was starting to wonder about the "other" part of the story because they only cut to it two or three times the entire game. And in trying to make combat more varied, they made it too easy. I ended up only using the hidden blade without holding the block button just to make it harder for me. I didn't even end up using two-thirds of the weapons they put in. -
Like everyone has said, play the first 2 before the 3rd one.
I have been a hardcore fan of the series since it's release, and I have played through them all multiple times.
You DEFINITELY need to play 1 and 2 before the 3rd one. It's like watching the 3rd Matrix movie, without watching 1 and 2.
1 is a little slower paced, and kind of repetitive, but it's still a great game. The 2nd game changes everything, and it is SO much fun.
I would rent the first one, and play it through (it's not really worth owning IMO), and I would buy the 2nd one. -
Damn I was afraid you guys would say that.
Well since the unanimous consensus is to the play the first two then I suppose I will. Like I said, the my friends and the community seem to hold the storyline in high regard so it should be fun.
Another question, how long will it take to beat the first two games if I just plow through them to get through the main storyline? And around how long if I do all the extras (provided there are extras)?
And all your responses are much appreciated, thank you. -
The games are quite long.
The first one isn't TO long, but it's a good few hours (I don't recall how long it took me, but maybe about 3-6 hours?)
The second game is actually quite long. I think it took me a good day to play through it all. Although I did a lot of sight-seeing, and running around, but it's still quite a long game. -
Oh that's not too bad. When people say "long", I assume 50-100 hours.
But it seems like I can get 'em done in two marathon play sessions. Not too shabby.
You know it's weird, when I was a kid, I loved games that lasted dozens upon dozens of hours, such as the old school Final Fantasy games. But now that I don't have as much gaming time, I actually like games with shorter campaigns and stories because they allow me to experience a broad spectrum of games despite my limited playing time.
Thanks for the help guys. -
I asked this question some time ago and people said the first one was far too repetitive to be worth playing with some suggesting we just watch a youtube movie that goes through the first story before going directly to play the second one.
