    I hear ya!

But from all I've learned over the years is to buy the best bang for the buck at the time and don't look back (or forward). Even tech that's just around the corner a lot of times doesn't live up to the hype, is too expensive, or never gets released.

For basic web surfing/browsing, office apps, multimedia a notebook bought now will last several years. Otherwise if you want gaming then plan on buying new every two years. I never really had a decent notebook, but have had tons of desktops including small form factor PC's.

Usually I can sell old components and it will pay for 30-50% of the new compnent, so at least its not too hard to chew that cost. Same thing with a laptop. I had a five year old Sony Vaio notebook with AthlonXP 1500+, 8MB ATI Video (yes, 8MB!), 512MB RAM, Windows XP. I sold it, along with the docking station for $350 on eBay! I bought it for about $1000 new. I put that money into buying my wife's new Vostro 1400 laptop and it paid for half of it.

Just think in two years time you'll have the latest and greatest again, then it'll be obsolete in six months. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Seems like they release HD 3400 and HD 3600 first, wow I wonder when their highend comes, I had almost counted out AMD/ATI but now they are releasing these. I´m very glad for the notebook market it is definitely catching up performance wise with the desktops ;)

htwingnut I agree with you, if you are a gamer be prepared to sell that laptop after 2 years :) I´m "upgrading" now to a XPS M1730 which replaces my XPS M170 which still is a fast notebook by all means.

I hope it will outperform the 8600gt and fit into a 15,4" since the 8800gtx isnt unless you put it into a really thick 15,4" chassi.

well they will most likely be on the 55nm process, so they can make a more powerful GPU that consumes less power...

if it as successful as the desktop series, then they could be alot of competition from these.

Well I have the radeon 3850 card in my desktop pc and its a damn fast card for the price and has a lower power consumption compared to the nvidia 8800 cards as it uses 55nm vs 65nm tech. It's not as powerful but its considerably cheaper. Although it does show you just how awesome the 8800gtx laptop card is lol. My card takes ~100-120watts at peak and gets ~9000 3dmark06 and the 8800gtx gets almost the same with only 37watts(?). Crazy stuff although you do pay far more for the awesome tech mind.

....so if a similar scenerio is transfered to the laptop versions i expect the 3400 and 3600 series to take on the 8400 and 8600gt series and the 3800 series to be faster than the 8700gt and 7950 versions but not quite as powerful maybe as the 8800gtx. It should be looking good for power consumption and price though hopfully. Lets hope also that ati get a good supply going and get them into a good market share for once!

The HD 3800 Mobile will probably be 256 bit, these lower ends compete directly with 8400m, 8600m and probably 8700m GT.

The previous HD 2xxx series had full h.263 and VC1 decode capabilities too via the integrated UVD.

I'm not expecting much from these parts other than a small power drop since the HD 3xxx series appears to be essentially a die shrink of the HD 2xxx series. The only really new feature is DX10.1 compliance. The specs for the desktop HD 3670 and HD 3650 show that they are clocked the same as the previous HD 2600Pro and XT so I don't think there will be much improvement in performance.

Remmember that the 8800m GTX is basically a stripped off 8800GT
So if there is ever going to be mobility HD3870 than it would take the crown from the 8800m GTX if it's performance is same as the desktop one so yeah AMD could arguably create the most fast mobile GPU after 3-2 years of failure(x1800, x800)

Will these replace the HD 2600 in the 8510p?
