Am just wondering if 6990m is able to play new games at ok settings? Thinking of getting a used laptop with it.

6990m should be between 6850/6870 desktop so yes, it's a decent card.

I'm running the M17x R2 with a 6970M. It runs most of my games at high settings still to this day. :p

The 6990M is a great card even now. The higher memory bandwidth is rather useful when you wanna increase the FXAA in games. I've noticed little to no hit to performance in most the games I play. Don't expect Crysis to run at 60 FPS at all high settings, but you should be good if you play around with the settings. Lowering shadows tends to help a lot with this card.

    Hope that helps! :D

Its old and dated and runs considerably hotter than the 7970m and 680m. I upgraded and haven't looked back.

I'm not surprised. The desktop 6850 has the benefit of much higher clock speeds, especially when overclocked, that the 6990M simply can't match. Still, a 6990M is a noticeable improvement from a Mobility 5850, and not a bad choice if it's dirt cheap.

It will. Don't get into the hype that you always have to have the latest and greatest.

The 765m is about 10% less powerful than the 6990m, and it plays everything I want perfectly fine. Depends on your needs and wants. Plus the 6990m has the benefit of 256-bit pipe so higher resolutions should play just fine. If you want 1080p ultra on everything no, it won't suffice. If you want to drop down detail a bit, mainly high settings, and turn off AA, it will run just great.

6990m has many threads where it died. I would be very wary of having it.

If it is dirt cheap get it. Be sure to undervolt it to 1V at stock clocks as this beast runs hot. Don't bother OCing as you will probably kill it.

Was a great card when I owned it. I had one in my GX660 before upgrading to a 7970m. It OC fine and ran great up until the day I got rid of it. I think I had it for around 6 months? Not sure anymore. Also, as others are saying it did run about 5 degrees or so warmer than the 7970m. I would undervolt it a bit to help with temps, and this will most likely also extend the life of the card. I wouldn't be thrown off by all the card dying talk though. Any mobile or desktop gfx card can die. I heard of plenty of people having their 580m taking a crap as well. Before my 6990m, I had the 5870m and I used and abused that card and it never gave me any trouble. I had it OC 24/7 to max stable and it ran like that for probably 1.5 years without any issues. Again up until I sold it it was running great.

I thought the 765m suppress sandy gen top gpus, at least according to synthetic benchmark.

Not in actual game performance though. In real games it's within a few percentage points of the GTX 580M and 6990M.

Just goes to show why one should never completely trust synthetic benchmarks.
