it is safe to say that the 680m will probably overclock 10% on stock voltage. i know with the 580m and .92v, you could go over 800mhz, but most people found gameplay choppy at 800mhz. it was a much smoother experience at 750mhz. We dont' know what the 680m will do just yet, so we will see.

Gratz, is your card overclocked yet? Have you played? If you already have a 7970m it doesn't make sense to get a 680m just so you can have nvidia lol...doesn't make sense at all unless you have deep pockets and like spending just because lol

    Without mods a 7970m runs Skyrim @ 80+fps 1080p maxxed with 4x MSAA, 16xAF on my system (stock clocks)[/QUOTE]

I should've pointed out that I have a 60hz screen and V-sync enabled. When I said 60+fps it is being limited due to this

If the official drivers show up for 7970m, wouldn't be on par or better than 680m? Has this happened before when 6990m cf vs 580m sli?

yeah makes sense...i disabled v-sync though as it was actually a much smoother gaming experience for me. Running around in the forest with vsync enabled was always a little fidgety...something to do with the mouse smoothing maybe

Bro, 7970m xfire is potent. You shouldn't be worried if the 680m sli scores better or gets a few frames more. This is a Corvette Z06 VS Mustang Shelby discussion. The issue with dual cards is always going to be game support and driver support. i know you boys on the m18x forums are tweaking and doing what you can to harness the power of the the dual 7970m's...I think we just have to be patient. A month or two from now, this will all be moot

Whether it's 5%, 10%, or 20% better - I'm going 680M. Sending the M18x R2 in my sig back today. It's all boxed up. Just not satisfied with the driver situation on the AMD side right now. I have more confidence in Nvidia in that regard. Not to mention my experience with the XM CPU has been lackluster...not worth the upgrade (as I suspected)...going 3720QM. :)

We have Metro 2033 and upcoming Metro Last light supporting PhysX. The new mech warrior game Hawken is also supporting PhysX. Upcoming Borderlands 2 support PhysX too.

So it isn`t dead, but not entirely widespread either :)

I don't blame you...Xfire 7970m isn't quite ready yet. i feel for you guys in the m18x forums. You are the early pioneers and it sucks.

THis also means that you will be laptopless until mid July which sucks too! :(

    +1 rep to you first.
Now the reason why I asked is I wanted to know if the official driver will greatly affect the performance on 7970m crossfire. Has this happened to other previous AMD cards like 6990?

Right now per notebook check, Arkham city runs 54fps maxed out in single 7970m but crossfire runs 61 fps. Will this increase more when the official drivers come out?

Yes, and the performance should gradually increase and several bugs and xfire advantages should show as time goes on, same goes with nVIDIA's drivers, they improve gameplay aswell as everything else

Just out of curiosity, Cloud, do you intend on getting a single 680M card configuration or SLI? Or is that decision relative to its actual performance?

Depends on the heat this thing produce. That is what concern me the most.
I have always used 75W GPUs earlier (using 460M now).

Gaming laptop-less...but otherwise I have quad-SLI GTX 680 in one rig and CFX 7970 in another. :)

There is a new delay? I thought Alienware was going to have 680M available at the end of the month. Ah - I see...8-10 days build time. Yeah.

I have a suspicion that AMD is deliberately delaying drivers 7970M GPU for the simple reason that they know exactly what Nvidia is going to do, which is engineer GPU that outperforms AMD's card by 5-10%, thus unleashing drivers with full performance when nvidia is settled with their card; which seems completely logical knowing what performance leap they managed to achieve and they must hold onto performance crown with all they can :)

its just me thinking out loud

I never thought about that, perhaps you're right.

Shame AMD cards don't have PhysX though, I love that - doesn't AMD have an equivalent?

    LOL...

Single cards work fine. But as usual, dual card configs will always take some time to mature. The same will happen with 680m SLI too. You aren't going to see amazing performance out of 680m SLI for the first few months. This aint going to happen

I have dabbled in SLI and Xfire on desktops all my life, so I know that there are many headaches in dual card configs. My current 670 SLI rig isn't trouble free either...no multi card setup ever is.

newer drivers will improve Xfire scaling for sure. Just be patient. games will run faster and have more compatibility as time goes on. I say within 2 months, you'll see much better support

The cards are underclocked 7870s, what magical performance could there be? The scores are already on par with what they should be at.

AMD 7990 with XDR2 rambus. XDR2 offers twice the bandwidth of DDR5 and uses 30% less power

Ha...if they weren't "Limited Edition" and overpriced it'd be an option...but that's why I built the rig to handle 4 cards. It's a lot more efficient that way from a cost perspective. :)

yes some even saw artifacts appearing, needless to say they might have ruined their card.. but anyways I surely hope the 680M has some kind of advantage as this is on the edge of ridiculousness
