Media Codec? Also, changelog?
And thank you. -
AMD has released the driver officially here: ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver
I am also checking the media codec thing and so far it seems to be AVIVO media converter. Both packages seem to contain the driver and CCC but the "Media Codec" thing has AVIVO but I cannot find it in CCC. I guess if you need Avivo you need to download xcode version and install it along with driver and CCC from that package. I installed 64 bit driver version first and then tried avivo from the other package and despite the successful installation - I can't find it in CCC or anywhere else.
Change log = release notes is here: AMD Catalyst? Control Center / AMD Vision? Engine Control Center 11.8 Release Notes. Provides a description of 11.8 download contents including product compatibility, new features and resolved issues
I tried the driver and it seems to be more "stable" or "immune" to overclocking memory. I can easily overclock my 5850 GDDR3 from the default 625/800 at 1.0V up to 900/1075 at 1.150 V. 3D Vantage score went up from 5858 up to 7805. I game at 800/1050.
With 11.6 max for memory was 1040 - giving me 7700 in 3dmark vantage. Someone in ACER forum suggested memory at 1100 - but it is too unstable in my case. -
-
If you have a tv-tuner based from amd media chipset then you need to install those codecs.
-
Wow, highlighted performance improvements for the 5000 series. That's nice to see.
-
) and am sure I have found the max clocks with 11.6 (I tried at least 10 combinations that previously worked). Actually 11.6 surprised me too since I remember 11.4 and 11.5 were faster (around 7700 3dmarks vantage at 1080 MHz for memory). I skipped 11.7.
-
-
any perf improvements? 3dmark vantage score comparisons?

EDIT: here are some comparisons:
11.6 625/800: 5838 - 5850
11.8 625/800: 5875 - 5881
11.6 900/1040: 7652 - 7700
11.8 900/1040: 7683 - 7703
But again - 11.6 for me wasn't stable over at 900/1040. I could test 800/1080 though. Now with 11.8 I can go to 900/1075 - no artifacts and score around 7800 (I did only one test though). -
-
Yeah I tried, but always get artifacts or graphic card stops responding at 1100. But yes if I lower core clock it is cooler, and mem can go higher which is better for 5850 GDDR3. It is always hungry for memory bandwidth. I'll do some more tests at 800/1100 or even lower core and see what happens.
-
I remember when I thought my max overclock was 600/900 =p
now I get 700/900
Haven't noticed any big changes that I can't attribute to placebo -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I wish I could increase ram at all.
(stupid gimped envy 14 gpu) -
I am seeing an Improvement in the MLAA tax. Where I was getting 45-47 fps, in Mass Effect 2, I now see 53-55 fps.
Nice improvement. -
Placebo effect is always possible. And sometimes drivers give better scores in benches only. But I am quite satisfied with this one. My games work flawlessly (I have older games though). -
Any ideas why I can't install it? I'm a noob when it comes to these new mobility drivers. I used to mod desktop drivers for my mobility hd 3650 on my previous computer.
It gives me the following message after I select the folder destination for extraction:
"AMD Catalyst Mobility cannot be downloaded due to incompatible hardware/software on your computer.
Your computer does not contain a proper graphics adapter"
I have recently purchased a P170HM with a 6990m and installed the vga driver from the driver cd that came with the rig. I have Windows Enterprise (Ultimate) 64bit on it. So I wanted to update, but I have this problem....
Any ideas?
EDIT: I Went to the official website and made sure that I selected the correct driver for the card, but I have the same problem. -

Ok! Seems to work now!
It was strange, though. This was my face when I got the incompatibility message --->especially when I read the log and everything.
I thought I was playing noobish.
Things changed now, I see. It is much easier and the manufacturers seem to give more attention to the mobile graphic market. I remember when I got my first laptop. It had a mobility hd 3650 and I was really getting pissed with the crappy OEM... until I found the DH mobility modder and slapped on some desktop drivers. I felt pretty BOSS. -
I still get black screen when alt tabbing out of Heroes of Newerth and sometimes cursor corruption on the same game. Back to 11.7. XD

This definitely works for my 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz running Bootcamp 4.0 and Windows 7 64 Professional.
But the question is why? I am curious because when another update comes down the pipe I want to avoid this issue.
