but it will still cool the bottom of the 522 which will probably reduce the heat insude

yeah it does believe me
actually to be more precise, the left side comes realy hot, so having air on that spot helps alot -
You probably can adjust the display through the Catalyst Control Center. You might also want to check the settings for that particular HDMI input on your screen.

Ati has a bad habit of always under scanning or over scanning the connection for random reasons... a fix is to adjust it in the ati control pannel

HELLO, my problem is solved thanks

I've been trying to push this computer to see how much I can get out of it as far as playing HD video. I tried to play a 10gb movie on WMP Classic and it played but at 15 fps instead of the 30 fps. I'm an absolute noob when it comes to this stuff so was this just a stupid thing to try with this computer or could I actually get it to play smoothly?
-

I havent tried the HUGE 1080p movies.
I seem to recall someone else tried it with Alien movie and it worked well. Just recently infact -
1080p WMVs however, are another story. Both MPC and Splash lite seem to be sluggish with them, but WMP plays them fine, have you tried them on it?
I now keep 3 players, each has its strengths depending on the type of file being played:
Splash Lite: Everything except FLV and WMV
MPC-HC: FLV
WMP: WMV -
Regarding Overscan, it varies depending on the TV model as well.
My 42 inch Sharp Aquos doesn't overscan as much as my 25 inch Sharp HDTV, both using the HDMI out of the Acer 522. There's a setting in Catalyst Control Center that remembers custom profiles for each HDTV you connect. -
An update regarding h264 playback on the AO-522:
Some of my MKV files with h264 video tracks were previously not "recognized" as such, and were therefore played under software playback. One way was to try them through the CoreAVC codec's own pipe to the GPU acceleration (which resulted in artefacts and stuttering, so no go for CoreAVC yet).
However with stjernefodt's great recommendation (the guide), I've installed the Haali Splitter (overriding the built-in splitter in MPC Home Cinema) and behold, it works fine now, with DXVA all the way!
So far my winning combo for Matroska and AVI files containing h264, is MPC-HC + Haali Media Splitter. Works with subtitles and all.

Search doesnt seem to work for me here so did anyone get a chance to test Zacate's GPU with indie games like Braid, etc.?
-
I considering games like tf2 and css works fine on a machine like this I am pretty sure low end indie games will work flawlessly
-
Well I modified the AMD Power Plan and changed it to use 100% CPU Power as Max. Now even Big Buck Bunny 1080p in YouTube plays flawlessly fullscreen at 24 fps with zero frames dropped. The Planet Earth trailer is smooth as swell, with a few slight hiccups (such as the bird scene). Anyway, I can now say that 99% of all HD clips, both YouTube and saved files, play flawlessly on my Acer 522.
As for installing Win7 ultimate instead of Starter, I did a few tests on another machine, I installed both versions on the same PC, and even if you disable AERO and all the visual effects in Win 7 Ultimate, Win 7 Starter still uses less RAM and is still the faster one of the two, both barebone installations. -

How did you do a clean install of Win 7 starter? -
Maybe this has been mentioned (this is a long thread)....but so many are damaging thier netbooks trying to remove the keyboard with a credit card or screwdriver from the top.
It took me less than 5 minutes to upgrade to 2gb. If you remove the battery and look inside the laptop just in front of the laptop battery contacts, you will see a 4x4mm hole. That is the base of the keyboard. Simply push in the hole with a blunt object, you will see that your keyboard will pop up enough that you can remove with your fingers. No screwdriver, no credit card and no damage to your laptop! -

Damn hadn't seen this method anywhere else, I wish I had known. -
yeah i busted my f4 key lifting it, where did you guys who bought another keyboard got it from?
cause im waiting for one but its been 6 weeks -
hi everybody!
sorry my bad english i'm italian...
what is the battery life if I set energy savings by Catalist and only surf the internet?
thank you very much!! -

For those installing Windows 7 on an SSD and trying to squeeze as much space as possible, here's a tip I found regarding the immense C:\Windows\WinSxS folder - you can slim it down drastically after you install Service Pack 1.
With a command prompt that has Administrator rights (type "CMD" in the search bar, then right-click with "Run as Administrator"), type the following command:
DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /SpSuperseded
It will remove uninstallation files for SP1 and make it permanent - therefore removing the duplicate old files. I gained 3GB on C:\, and some users report higher space gains (it depends on languages installed, options, etc etc.)
Hope it helps,

Can anyone tell me if 64bit is compat with this, I want to upgrade from starter after I get one of these to ultimate.

Check this out, here's your overclocking! The c-60, which is a c-50 with overclocking features bringing the CPU up to 1.33 ghz and the GPU to 400 ghz.
My understanding was that the c-50 was basically an underclocked e350, so here we go. Here's the link for the "leak". I wonder if we will get access to the "turbo" application or will the netbooks need to be specially configured to handle the ventilation? Which drives to another point, if the c-50 is capable of much more, is it simply the design of the units to offset temperature, or something else?

hi everybody
where can I find a comparison between ontario c-50\6250 and asus 1015pn n550\ion2 8cores? which is better in gaming?
is it possible to overclock ontario?
thank you very much!! -
Shadowfate Wala pa rin ako maisip e.
Overclock Ontario is not yet possible.....
I cant answer the first one -
thanks Shadowfate!
the c-50 is only a e-350 downclocked or are different chips? -
Where do you see 8 cores in n550?
-
the n550 is only 2 cores with 2 hyperthreaded.... even if that our c-50 can actually outperform the n550 on most tests where the n550 only wins because the program likes higher clocks on the cpu
-
ION2 says it runs 8 cores. This setup relies on Intel's internal graphics solution. From my experience flip-flopping between two video cards is never a fun thing to deal with. Plus that means when you are using ION2 for 3d your battery life will be hindered.
-
-
nonono thats the pipelines/cores on the gpu which can be used up to 16... on the asus its only using 8 of the 16 that it could be manufactured with... the gpu is a clocked down version of either their 9300/9400 thats been watered down inspecs...more then likey broken versions of their higher end parts clocked down

Rolling your own...
I've been a long time user of the freeware utility called WinRoll 2.0 [1], which is used to "roll up" windows in their title bars ("MacOS-like") by right-clicking anywhere in the titlebar, a feature I find incredibly useful, especially on a small screen. It's different than virtual desks (which I also use with freeware VirtuaWin[3]).
Unfortunately, Winroll was written in assembly and doesn't run under a 64bit OS (might not even work with Win7-x86 - it makes my PC freeze badly, you've been warned!). The only other utility that I know which can do something similar is Filebox Extender [2]. but it's not as elegant solution IMHO (you have to click on a small button in the titlebar and not anywhere... I know, I'm picky!
).
I wonder if any of you knows of a freeware that would do something like Winroll ?

I read about an app that does the same thing today as a matter of fact
winsupermaximize - A tiny Windows utility that "super maximizes" (ie removes the title bar from) the active window. Like "Full Screen" (F11) in IE, but for any window. - Google Project Hosting
take a look at that -
A quick tip, don't know if it has happened to you guys as well, but I used to get a popup on my desktop every half hour or so, reminding me to upgrade my Adobe Flash Player. I couldn't make them go away even after uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Flash. Turns out those popups are just the built-in screen saver Acer puts on many of their netbooks. Just disable the screen saver or change it to something different and the nagging popup goes away.

hey guys, just wondering does win 7 64 bit run faster than win 7 starter for this netbook? Im thinkin of upgrading and theres this sweet deal going on at the source where it costs $20 to upgrade. Deal ends on the 22nd, so tomorrow, plus you could try price matching at bb/FS
http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Prod...gory=Operating+Systems&product=2616688&aff=cj -
Its been stated in this post that Windows 7 Starter is faster then Win Ultimate 64bit. I think it was because starter runs less processes then Ultimate 64bit.
-
Win 7 32 bit typically is faster than Win 7 64 bit because typical applications are 32 bit architecture. Win 7 64 bit must run 32 bit applications in a 32 bit "sandbox". It's the overhead for this sandbox that makes 64 bit Win 7 appear slower.
If you run native 64 bit apps on 64 bit Win 7 you might find it faster than the same native 32 bit apps on 32 bit Win 7.
But maybe not; a primary advantage for a 64 bit app is the capability for using much greater RAM than its 32 bit sibling. The AO522's 4 GB max RAM may not offer adequate RAM to show off this advantage. Machines designed from the ground up to host 64 bit OS's and 64 bit apps will typically have a minimum of 8 GB RAM, usually more.

i currently have 4 gigs installed. Is it worth it to upgrade to win 7 32 bit then? If my system can use all 4 gigs of ram then it should be faster right? But you guys said starter is already faster because it uses less processes...so there is no reason to upgrade then or is there?
-
ultimate is likely slower because of the heavy over head it had
edit half my post was gone silly netbook can`t wait for my laotop to come back -
well starter can only use a MAX of 2gb so you have 2 of your 4gbs doing nada
