I did a fresh install of Windows 8 Enterprise 64bit on my 522. Metro UI doesn't work as the resolution is to low. Performance wise i could say it runs on par with Windows 7, maybe a little bit snappier. I've got about 700MB of RAM usage on system startup with no applications running in Desktop mode. Regarding boot time, i couldn't say i've seen any drastic improvement, maybe because i have a triple boot setup... It's pretty stable with no drivers needed except the newest Catalyst, even though it crashed on me once. I'll report any new quirks in the following days.

Also have 12.11 beta installed, works well but haven't noticed any speed improvements

I found 13.2 beta 4 to work quite nicely, I only play Dota 1 and yet it plays more smoothly than it did before.

I still find that Vimeo HD lags though =/

Hi everyone. Finally have a new reason to see whats up around these parts heh. Anyways just got my Acer Aspire One from AT&T with its C-50. Which I know the C60 is better, however the att model least has the sim card hardware. (Which is nice) Upgraded it to 4GB ram too.

So anyways, been hearing about these placebo effects to take it to 4 ghz (which I already know is a false reading and doesnt do anything) Then I am hearing about k10stat which seems no one has really proven that it doesnt help performance any? Is this correct?

Anyways I am wondering if anyone found any good tweaks to increase FPS rates in some games any? Now I will admit, this lil netbook has surprised me. It plays FFXI pretty well. I just wouldnt mind some extra fps from it heh. Also I have noticed, upgrading from windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro seems to help this netbook respond abit better too. Which is good. =)

Anyone tried putting a Broadcom BCM70015 into one of these 522s? Just wondering if it would improve gaming as well as video performance. It goes into the slot where your wi-fi card is and, apparently, takes most of the decoding load off the GPU which then only has to do the page flipping, pixel shuffling, etc. A friend of mine tried one of these on an older Intel Atom netbook and he was amazed at the increase in video performance. Link below:

BCM970015 Broadcom Video/Audio Hardware Decoder Accelerator Crystal HD PCI Express mini card Hardware Decoder

If you read the comments on that item you'll see that it seems to work well in some netbooks... especially when you use a player that does not come with its own codecs (VLC does) but rather uses the included Windows 7 codecs..

Looks nice, but does seem like its for videos more then it would be for gaming. (Unless the game had a pre-rendered video for playback)
Now I know on my other netbook, Id love to have been able to see 720p and up easier. Thing is, on that one, I think I used that free slot for my bluetooth, so dont think I have room now for this heh. Then in my current netbook, the slot is for my 4G modem.

However nice find! I never knew they existed!

I'm going to order one in a couple months when I have some extra money to spend. I'll report back to see if it really does boost video and gaming performance. But I think you're probably right about it being primarily for video and audio decoding and would not help games very much, if at all.

I'm surprised to see that this thread is still alive. My Acer 522 is two years old but still runs great. It looks like they are getting hard to find (got mine from a neighbor).

Still using my c-50 as a primary computer. You will want to use brazostweaker to lower the voltage which at factory levels is fairly high and not necessary. Through undervolting you'll get some minimal battery increase and of course less wear on the hardware itself.

Regarding the Setfsb, I checked today to see if there was any good news regarding this. Someone has to take their netbook completely apart to find coding information. We are a lazy bunch.

I get perfect emulation with psx software and mame runs well, though I have trouble with the newer Cave shmups. It can play DDOJ, Ketsui and Espgaluda perfectly.

Also, surprisingly, I can video edit with cyberlink power director. It's not snappy, but works.

Yeah, I should upgrade but it does video in HD very well and works well for my daily use. I am still impressed with the level of performance considering how cheap this sold for.

Personally I bought my Acer 522 in early 2011 and used it a lot during two years. I played a lot with it, sometimes with performance many would consider unplayable though. These days I don't play as much and I'm using much more my old Dell Inspiron from 2006 because it is faster for web browsing. I am not totally surprised that The Cave is not running well on the C-50. Last year, I was a bit disappointed by the poor performance of Stacking from the same developers (I think). Recently I have tried Torchlight 2 which runs quite well. I am pondering on an SSD upgrade for this year, to breath new life into it.

Hey AO522 owners. I found a way to overclock the monitor refresh rate. I got it to 110 hz. I made a guide about it here:
DIY Hardware Hacks and Mods: How I overclocked Acer Aspire One 522 screen refresh rate to 110 hz

It SHOULD work with other netbook and laptop screens and even with desktop monitors. I wonder if anyone can get even higher than 110 hz on their screen ( although some may get lower ).. Anyways, check it out and post results.

Really amazing value from this tiny cheap netbook :)

Good day. Sorry for my bad English) I have Asus 1015bx with c-60. Bios 0610. I have very intersting problem with Brazostweaker. Unfortunately it doesn't ghange voltage. Programms show me voltage that i have made (P2 0.9 for example), but in reality i haven't see some changes in working time or temperature. And what interesting i can change voltage to 0.5V at 1333 mhz (as u can see it's unreal). At 0.4875V netbook freezes, but i think that it's bug of the programm. But I can change multiplier in Brazostweaker. If someone have such problem please answer me. Thank you.

Hi malexsky! I hope you get this message... I have recently found this post, I do own a 1215B - AMD c50. The thing is, I can't overclock it, eventhough I have SetFSB already. All I get is a "SMbus error" message. I even have contacted Abo - SetFSB creator.
Could you please let me know which version of SetFSB did you use back then to make this OC possible? I'd really appreciate your help!

    Cheers!

I have had a few C-60 notebooks one Win7 and one Win8 but they were so slow, always running at 100% or close, so slow like watching paint dry, 600 passmark points is just not enough, you really need at least 1000 to 1500 to be usable running Win7 or Win8 , dont know how other OS would run though.

Oh Yeah, just ordered an A6-1450 Quad cpu based notebook it gets around 1600 passmark points.

On the AMD C-50 the gpu is great, it`s the cpu that lets it down with an passmark score of only 444 points

Also running a video higher than your native resolution, eg running an fullhd video on an screen that`s not even hd, means it`s being down-scaled so it`s not a true test i would think.

It's a shame the unlocked BIOS doesn't unlock the dynamic clocks, overclocking would help so much. :(

Well considering you can buy machines with at least twice the performance for < $300 there's no need. And the Acer V5-122p 11.6" with A6-1450 quad core costs $350 and can run pretty much anything out there. Not to mention the Asus Transformer T100 that can also play games reasonably well for < $300.
