Hey thanks for the help akop2

I finally got everything working, even after the direct x end user runtime installation the sound didn't work, I had to install the CCCP codec pack.

As of right now i get pretty smooth play back but unfortunately at sometimes it drops and becomes choppy, I will try upgrading to 2gb ddr3 1066 and see if the situation is any better.

disable the LAN adapter from device manager and see if you still get frame drops.

yeah it still dips, watching the performance graph while the movie is playing shows that both cores are at 96-100% is this true with anyone else?

Alright, for people who can't configure DXVA, just use SplashLite, there's one option you tick, and voila hardware acceleration.

    couple questions:

-i notice my fan gives a little burst (.5 sec) then nothing again for 5 min or so and repeat...if just sitting there doing nothing...anyone else notice this?

i have power set to balanced (rec) default...wonder if would be better to run threw amd power plan and perhaps one of the presets under catalyst control center presets (air travel, battery saver, gaming, movie, web browsing)

-wonder what this netbook would be like with a ssd drive

***Note*** just read some guys review at amazon (has video) and he said he couldn't play 1080p video...but once he installed k-lite codec pack it played np........

I just registered because I had to say that this is a very useful thread. I'm thinking of buying an AMD Fusion netbook, but there are not reviews yet, which is quite annoying. I want something for light work and gaming, and considering I currently game a little on my Fujitsu P1510D (Pentium M 1.2GHz, Intel GMA 900) that'd be a huge improvement.

It's good to know that the Acer 522 is expandable to 4GB (I definitely want that) and that it can be found very cheaply in Canada (because I have relatives visiting there in a couple of months; prices here in Israel will likely be much higher when it finally arrives).

    So thanks everyone for posting.

For those with problems with DXVA in MPHC

View-Options-Internal Filters- Transform Filters Check all DXVA options I think there are 2

It was automatic in Windows Media PLayer for me

    I used CCCP

    @will

it should not use 100% of the CPU. 108-p vvideos use only 30%

Got HD videos playing smooth on my 522 now. Installed the latest dxruntime and things got smooth. 30% cpu usage, and no stutter. Still can't get VLC to use dxva, but whatever.

Ok here is a PIC of my RAM usage

Look at the upper right corner. as you can see RAM usable is only 1700mb. 200+MB is used by the GPU, and 662 is already used by the OS. That would leave VERY few mbs left for other programs

Now here is the usage when playing 1080p vid of "waka waka" almost no difference in RAM and it only uses around 30-40 percent of the CPU.

Ugh, even in AMD fusion laptops, the CPU bottlenecks the computer to hell in gaming. They make great (probably the best in terms of raw performance) GPUs, but really their mobile CPU development is lagging behind at least 2 years to Intel's..

Uhhhh Single core Atoms are slower than this...and particulary this "APU" wasn't even meant for gaming. Just for basic computing and HD Movies. The fact that it can still play some games is an extra.

If you want more performance get the Zacate. The CPU uses a new architecture so i dont think this is "lagging behind" intel right now. Atoms still dont have OoO and some other features that an APU has.

    Offtopic: Nice post count 522

Purchased my Aspire One 522 last Friday @ Bestbuy; a starting price of $269 is fantastic for the technology packed into this small netbook.

I say the starting price because I couldn't leave it alone and had to perform some upgrades over this past weekend.

Swapped out 1GB Samsung with a 4GB Corsair DDR3 SODIMM
Swapped out 250GB Toshiba HD with a 120GB Vertex 2 SSD
    Upgraded Win7 SE with Win7 Pro 64bit
Installed appropriate drivers and left out all the bloatware

    Now this puppy sings...

    Windows Experience Index
    Processor AMD C-50 Processor 2.8
    Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB 4.9
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6250 Graphics 4.1
Gaming graphics 1909 MB Total available graphics memory 5.5
Primary hard disk 59GB Free (78GB Total) 7.6

Hopefully AMD or someone will release a hack so we can unleash the full potential of the AMD Zacate CPU inside.

P.S. Big Thanks to Shadowfate for beginning this thread...

Okay so it turns out, if you have mcafee installed and running, when playing back videos on WMC ur cpu is 100% and u get choppyness

when i removed mcafee cpu % dropped to 30 and plays smoothly, that explains it.

Based from that it should be faster by s small margin for the GPU though I think a 3410 is faster.

Of course they based it on benchmarks and not actual usage

The AMD Fusion E-350 is basically comparable to a Intel Core 2 Duo SU4100. It wins barely over the Core 2 Duo in most real-life tests, but loses slightly in benchmarks.

Read your thread before buying last Friday.

If the past has any bearing on the future I'm sure AMD will release some OCing tools; ie. x2 & x3 CPUs unlocked to x4 or 6950 video cards unlocked to 6970.

Install was pretty simple. Needed three things to open the netbook cleanly; credit card, screw driver & a chopstick

    1. Ensure the battery & AC power is removed
    2. Used a credit card to push in the small tabs along the function keys at the top
    3. After the tabs are pushed in the keyboard can be pulled forward
    4. Unlock the keyboard ribbon to remove keyboard by gently pushing the white tab toward yourself
    5. With the keyboard off, unscrew the four clearly marked screws (Designated by a circle around the number 1)
    6. Push the chopstick through the clearly marked hole to pop the bottom plate off the netbook
    7. Flip the netbook over and the original memory & 2.5 inch hard drive will be accessible
    8. Memory is removed by pushing the small metal tabs gently away till it pops up at an slight angle
    9. Hard drive can be removed from the netbook by taking out one screw. The hard drive is covered in a metallic tape shielding which can be gently removed and reused on the replacement SSD/HD; believe four small screws attach to some flimsy metallic side rails.
    10. Reverse order to put everything back together again

While not the exact model, this youtube video is very similar to openning the 522 YouTube - Acer Aspire One D255 Ram Upgrade

If I had the forsight, I would have made my own youtube video of the upgrade procedure...

DM1z is better successor than Mini 311, better in everyway, unless you really need 10" for portability, the 522 certainly performs better than Mini 311 but not as good as DM1z with much faster GPU and CPU.

Hey everyone, been trying to keep up with this thread..just got my 522 and been messing around with it. Ubuntu 10.10 isn't working to well, amd drivers don't seem to be supported, i'm getting the watermark in the bottom right corner. I installed Windows 7 ultimate and used the x64 drivers someone unloaded on here (thanks for that). But where can I get the webcam software and all the acer software that was on there? especially the multi-gesture support, I installed the synaptics drivers but no multi-gesture support..? Or is all that software gone forever? Contact Acer?

Installed my 4gb memory, works great (all 2gb usable of it lol). Actually, since the GPU uses around 300mb of memory, the machine only has about 700mb usable by windows new. However, with a 4gb stick, even though only 2gb is usable by windows, I guess the GPU takes its 300mb from the unused 2gb. So, long story short, even though windows 7 starter has a 2gb max, installing 4gb does effectively give you 300mb more usable ram than 2gb.

    Thanks everyone for your help!

Oh and quick note: Thanks to whoever pointed out the laptop is selling for $270 now at BestBuy. I bought at $300, which means I'm heading in for a rebate today! I suggest anyone who bought for $300 do the same!

Sale ends today! Get in there and get some money back!

I love this little netbook. I ran out and bought one after reading this thread. Only problem is that HoN (Heroes of Newerth) crashes on startup. Anyone else try to get that game working on this model?

Mind you I still have the stock 1GB installed so im pretty sure that's the reason. Gonna get RAM soon but im scared to pry off the keyboard. :(

Hey, bought this little guy and I love it. Only thing I need to be totally happy is for silverlight to support hardware decode.

Has anyone installed Windows 7 x64 on this yet? Seriously debating getting one of these and the 4GB Corsair chip mentioned earlier. How is the driver support after making the switch to x64?
