    In terms of MXM, nothing.

Only thing that comes close is the RX 480.

Well I'm currently looking to replace my 8970M.

Is there another Mobile GPU that can be used to replace the Radeon 8970M that has specs on par with a 1070 or 1080?

My laptop is Sager Clevo P375SM or NP9390

RX 480 can sometimes be had pretty cheap actually but its closer to 1060 performance.

Sometimes had for 150 or sub 200 on ebay even right now.

But will I need to modify anything or get a new heatsink to install it?

Unless you find precedent, its uncharted territory.
