these cards will be out soon, but judging from their architecture, which one is better? (exclude the bang-for-buck concept)

The 880M is the better card. The M290x is just a rebranded 7970M.

Just something to consider... The 880M is like $1100 on eBay? And there's no warranty. You may be better off holding out until this summer when Maxwell hits. Whatever card they release to replace the 880M (on Maxwell) will be the same price, but will likely perform about two times better. There are rumors going around that it will be named "880MX" or "890M", but nobody knows for certain.

One thing I know for certain: If it's coming out this summer, rumors, benchmarks, etc. will begin spewing out at the end of March, into April. If we don't hear anything by the end of April, it's likely that there will not be a release this summer. (It's still a possibility, just much less likely.) Either way, you should wait until May before pulling the trigger.

I agree... the current 880M is just a 780M rebrand with a overclock... The only real maxwell part is one of the 860M's and even that has proven the potential of Maxwell... I would seriously wait till June-July before getting anything... Supposedly, the new Intel processors will also be moving to DDR4 so really, just hold on for a few more months...

i wouldn't ever buy a video card above $400. its just not worth it for the performance gains.

but if i were to, it would be the 880m.

Well then, even with 'only' dual 880M's you will be playing upcoming games on ultra settings at 1080p for a long, long while to come :)

Nothing to be stuck over. GTX 880M is much faster than R9 290x
Even buy the GTX 780M if you can. Its 20-25% ish faster than R9 290x

If you're waiting on Alienware, someone was saying that Alienware is an Nvidia launch partner, and according to their contract, they have to launch prior or on 3/21 (this coming Friday). This makes perfect sense considering if you, for example, try to order a new Sager with the 880m, you'll notice that its backordered until 3/21... take this with a grain of salt and/or hearsay, but it sounds legit.

nah, i have my alienware m18x before and my brother has it now, so buying for myself, i chose a smaller one, i travel a lot and there's no denying that alienware build quality is one of a kind and the aluminum chassis is just awesome. But i have it for 2 years and having difficulty taking out my laptop in my hand carry and letting it go in through the scan machine, im the on the go guy and yeah still i want a dominating DTR but not as big as 18x, sometime i have multiple connecting flights with boarding gates far away

i dropped the ball to sager np9377-S, with 880m sli of course, what made me took sager? the 120hz screen :D not as big and heavy as alienware but that should suit my needs and type of job :) alienware and sager are beast DTRs, my last alienware i gave already for my brother, and im going for another brand so both of me and my bro are not the similar laptops
