    Hello all,
I've searched high and low, this amazing forum as well as the internet and no such luck on much information on this graphics card.
I have the new Sony Vaio SB i7 with 1gb AMD 6630M.
I've ran it through 3Dmark06 and received 7542 score.

I have heard though that Sony underclocks these cards a lot so I would like to push safely just a little more.

I tried ATI tray tool and it crashed.
I tried AMD GPU and not compatible.
I tried MSI Afterburner and cant overclock, only to stock clocks.

I've been hearing this is unoverclockable, but it this really true?
Any of your overclocking pros can provide any direction or help?

    Let me know, thank you

the 6630m is already an underclocked card, its the same chip as the 6650m and the 6730m. And no sony didnt underclocked this one

You could try Sapphire TriXX GPU tool.
That was the only program that would enable me to overclock my AMD Radeon HD 6970m over the AMD Overdrive limit.

Not that i need an overclock, so im back to the "safe" limit of AMD Overdrive.

    Hope this helps,

    @DEagleson
Sapphire Trixxx worked perfect and easy/simple software. I will only be overclocking slightly in the near future when games require a bit more push from this 1gb AMD 6630M.
Even on no overclock, it runs all high/extra for COD/Black Ops as well as on medium/high for BF:BC2. With zero lag.
So even a safe overclock might allow me to receive some better "eye candy" if I need.

Thank you all, this forum is a God send at times!

Even though my question is answered could someone clarify at Mr.MM statement that the 6630M is same as the 6650M and 6730M?
    Whats the differences then?
I did some research and it seems the 6650 and 6730 have higher specs, so they are different.....

they use the same chip, the difference is the clock, the 6750m and the 6770m, are the same chips as the others but with GDDR5 and higher clocks

However, your overclocking on the 6630M is going to be heavily restricted to the GDDR3 VRAM and also the possible lower voltages that are imposed on it vs. the 6750M and the 6770M. Therefore your 6630M might never reach the stock performance yields of the 6750M thanks to the GDDR3 VRAM.

That being said, I am sure you can still squeeze an additional 10%-15% out of it with a decent and stable overclock under the assumption it also has good voltages!

thats why i said in the other post that you can reach (depending on the card) the performance levels of the 6650m and the 5730m since those 2 are GDDR3 equipped

Hey, this is ForumNewb here. I'm thinking of buying a Vaio SB with beomsu21's configuration and I was wondering, with the small size of the computer and an i7+6630m, how well does it manage heat while under load?

    Thanks.

6630M is going to be ROP bound compared to a 5730....

I am not sure what ROP bound exactly means, but to reply to ForumNewb,
I have played quite a few games and one of them is BF:BC2 which is pretty CPU intensive compared to other FPS and my fan runs pretty high, but not too bad and with the settings to a little above medium to high I have played for a few hours and it reach max temps of about 75C to less than 80C.
This is with very slight overclocking.

on the bottom left side of the track pad, it is near ice cold....
but on the bottom right side of the track pad it gets quite warm.

I dont do stress tests and full complete tests.. I just do realistic, everyday tests and if it passes then I am fine.. Currently I am really happy.. .aside from wishing they reduced the frame around the lcd as well as making the notebook a little smaller, its perfect...

The 5650 to 6770 all have 8 ROPs, you can look up their function, but they depend on the core clock, so having lots of shaders, lower clocks and still a decent amount of mem bandwidth the ROP count will limit performance.

That's great. I didn't think a cpu and gpu of that power could be fit into a 13 inch laptop and work without overheating. I've always thought that 13 inchers are meant to use entry level cpus and gpus at best. Must be that I'm using my Asus ul30vt for too long. Time to replace. : D

so i learned a lot in this thread about the 6600M/6700M cards in this thread. can someone explain why you wouldnt put a 6750M into a laptop instead of a 6650M. They have same clock speed and shaders but one has GDDR3 and the other GDDR5. Is it simply because its more expensive?...does GDDR5 run hotter? i mean 3dmark06 scores look about 2k higher so why not have the other chip? why even make the other one haha. simple answer is fine i seek wisdom of forum

GDDR5 at the same speed provides double the bandwidth.

It unlocks whatever chip is connected to it and allows it to perform as best as it ever will.

here is the page of trixx to overclock and underclock. If you were here and it didn't work, I don't really know how to help you hopefully somebody else does.
for me, I just dragged that little dial in orange.

I'm at 700/900 atm. I can't overclock more on the Core side (limited at 700), and I'm afraid of overclocking the memory.

If you open Trixx again after setting your core to 700, the slider will have more space and you can overclock higher, however I topped out at 725mhz anyway. The memory made it just past 1ghz. I settled on 700 core and 950 memory to be safe. This makes a meaningful difference in some of the more graphic heavy areas of Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.

Btw, I did this with a Sony Vaio SA. I've underclocked my processor to reduce the noise of the fan, and overclocking the graphics card does not seem to increase heat or noise to any major degree.

Edit: In UniEngine's Heaven demo, core overclocking makes a much bigger difference than memory if done one at a time.

I have an SA also with an i5 2520m and 4GB of RAM (soon to be 8GB once I receive my stick from newegg). My question is that what are the risk of overclocking the processor and memory, as I've never done this before. And is it a big threat? Whenever I try to play Heroes of Newerth on my laptop, the fan is LOUD, almost like an jet on takeoff, and it runs hot enough to cook an egg almost, around 82c to 92c and I'm scared it'll fry something. The game isn't even that graphic intensive, as I had a 5 year old SR-190 Core2Duo before that could play it somewhat well at low to medium graphics. You said that overclocking would help the fan and heat, and I'd really like to do that before something bad happens. So after I download that TriXX, what should I set everything at? And does it matter if I overclock it now with 4GB of RAM or next week with 8GB of RAM, as does the RAM make a difference in overclocking?
    Thank you,
    -Kenny

    You are confusing things.

He overclocked the gpu not the cpu.

The temps would rise due to the overclock (gpu)

The temps that you posted are those for the gpu or cpu?

the amount of RAM doesnt matter.

And its granted that such a small device would make quite a noise under load. Even most gaming machines do, to expect silence when under load is to fight reality

Just get a proper notebook cooler for them long gaming sessions.
    You wont regret it. :D

Also system ram does not affect GPU overclocking at all, at least to my understanding.

So would you recommend downloading TriXX and overclocking it or no? And I'm not sure if it's cpu or gpu, but I have Core Temp and both the red and blue numbers displayed usually are about the same. So if I overclock using TriXX from what you said, would that rise the temperatures even more? Are those temperatures considered really high and bad? And it just bothers me how loud it is because even my old SR-190 didn't make THAT loud of a sound.

Also, is it normal for the trackpad to become non-responsive when I have sweaty fingers? (I have a condition where my entire hands will sweat excessively when I'm focusing on someting) Because my old SR-190's trackpad had absolutely no problems with my sweaty fingers and this one just freaks out and I have to wipe the pad with my shirt or some napkins. What should I do to fix this, put some type of film over the pad to prevent moisture..?

    lets do this by parts

get 3dmark vantage and use a software called hwmonitor to check the temps, report back with a screenshot, with this we can see if your temps are too high. And yes usually overclocking leads to higher temps in the case of 2-5c this is usually the case, sometimes it can go higher, but since I dont know if you are giving me the cpu temps or the gpu temps, I cant say if its good or not to overclock, but as you can see there are a lot of vaio SA owners who do overclock their gpus, so its safe to assume that no harm will come due to high temps.

Usually I repaste my cpu and gpu to ensure better cooling, sometimes it drops quite a bit, sometimes not

your old SR is also twice as thick as this one. My mbp when pushed to 6000rpm on the fans also makes quite a racket as most 13'' do. You also have to see that any notebook under load makes quite a noise, another thing that you can do is to keep your notebook up to date, there was a bios fix for the SA due to the fans being too noisy.

The trackpad used now are capacitive, gives you better accuracy, but dont play that well with water, check your touchscreen cell, it wont work.

And the picture above is taken while Heroes of Newerth is open.

And I don't know how to post the 3D vantage but does this work?

AMD Radeon HD 6750M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i5-2520M Processor,Sony Corporation VAIO score: P4042 3DMarks

I tried finding the Sony BIOS update on Sony USA but couldn't see it, could you link me?
It just bothers me that when I'm in class and trying to focus on listening and quickly typing and editing some stuff, my trackpad just bugs out because my fingers are wet :/

the idea of vantage is to see how far in temps your pc can go.

the cpu is getting quite warm, while your gpu is pretty ok.

so yeah download trixx and oc the thing, the program is pretty much self explanatory, just slide the core clock and memory clock, with small increments (5-10mhz each time) and test it to see if its stable (play a game or run vantage)

you could try to repaste the cpu and the gpu, its pretty easy and its no rocket science

Use ATi Tool to test if the GPU is stable and log the temps with GPU-Z. My i3 380M is usually @ 60C and my HD5650m/HD5730m is @ 70C (Chopper mod) while i am gaming. Its really depending on the game BFBC2 lets run my notebook much hotter than Minecraft :) or CoD4.

But doesn't Vantage take like 10+ minutes to run? And trying to run it after every 5-10 mhz would take forever. Also, I don't know how to tell if it is even stable or not.
Right now on TriXX, my Core clock is 485, Memory Clock is 800 and GPU voltage is 900, which is the lowest setting. Someone said to set the core at 700 and memory at 950 to be safe, but I don't know if this is verified or not :/

every card is different, thats why you try by doing those increments.

the 6650m is 600 core and 900 ram

try that first, if it works go for the increments

Well the person who told me to set it at 700 and 950 has an SA290X also, so that means he would also have the 6630m. It would just be so much easier to set it at the right setting at the start because I just don't know how to gauge if it is working or not, like would the computer crash, the temperature go off the chart, or will something else tell me it's wrong?

as I said every card is different, use vantage to gauge if its artifacting (problems on the image and so forth) BSODs, locks

dont try to raise that high at first go slow, that was his maximum overclock that was stable, it doesnt mean that you are going to get that high.

His clocks are even higher than the 6730m

Okay that makes sense, but would you even recommend overclocking it then, since I think you said overclocking raises the temperatures +/- 5c and my laptop already runs around 85c-95c while playing the game?

You misunderstood, I UNDERclocked my CPU, as in reduced clock speeds. It is the graphics that I overclocked.

edit: btw, Overclocking threads have an understood unstated disclaimer that your mileage may vary. I never meant to imply that my clock speeds would be universal for all 6630Ms or Vaio SAs.

The chip is soldered straight to the motherboard.

so i tried gaming on my VAIO SA laptop. here's the report:

i installed EA Origin in a Sandboxie sandbox due to privacy concerns (Origin scans some completely unrelated folders on your HDD), and downloaded and installed FIFA 12 in the same sandbox as Origin.
to play the game, i connected my laptop to an HDTV with an HDMI cable, enabled the Vsync and ATI Micro-Stuttering options, and set the following:
resolution --> 1366x768 (the native resolution of the LCD TV),
    rendering quality --> high,
    MSAA --> 4x.
the game ran fine with the stock-clocked GPU (485MHz/800MHz), but there were those times that i could notice some stuttering or frame drops (i don't know which one, as this is my first attempt at PC gaming after 16 years!). i then overclocked the Radeon HD 6630m with TRiXX to 650MHz/950MHz (GPU core/memory) and played for about 2 hours non-stop. everything was smooth, and the maximum GPU temperature was 76C, and it never went above. the laptop fan was running fast, but the game audio was covering it completely, so i was not distracted by that at all.

after that, i ran another 3DMark06 benchmark (default settings) with the new GPU/memory clocks (650MHz/950MHz), and the total score is 9019 (SM2.0 score: 3173, HDR/SM3.0 score: 4030). my previous 3DMark06 score for 600MHz/900MHz clocks were 8566 (SM2.0 score: 2995, HDR/SM3.0 score: 3796). the new score is about 18.5% higher than the score for the stock clocks (which is about 7614 according to a post in the SA owners' club thread).

i think i'll settle with these new clocks; they're stable and the laptop fan can completely handle the temperatures.

Check the machine using Vantage. DirectX 9 support/optimization from ATI is lackluster as of late, but DX10/11 seem to run reasonably better.
