    Hello, i have a hp dv6 - 1264ca that has:

    OS : Vista 64x

    CPU : AMD Turion X2 Ultra 2.2ghz (zm-82)

    GPU : Ati 4650 mobility 1GB

    RAM : 4GB DDR2

    HDD : Momentus 500 GB 5400 rpm

and i am currently trying to play games the games css, cod mw 2, and bad company 2.

The first game i installed on this laptop was css. when playing i got about 40-60 fps with many stutters and resorted to the lowest settings and configs to get 60-80 fps. I then bought cod mw 2 and was getting 20-30 fps on the lowest possible settings.

At first i thought this was normal until my friend got a very similar laptop to mine. the diff between our laptops is that he has and AMD 2.3ghz and his hard drive runs at 7200rpm. The reason im sort of angry is that he gets a cosntant 60+ fps on css without and configs, as well as smooth gameplay in cod mw 2 on medium/high settings.

I also tried battlefield bad company two in which he claimed as running smooth on the lowest settings. I then tried the game on lowest settings and changed the dx level to 9 and get a unplayable frame rate (5-15) fps.

Im really not sure what i can do about this situation because im reading other reviews that claim that his GPU should be performing moderately on medium settings for the games ive been trying to play and it seems as if im the only one suffering this poor performance. can someone plz tell me if my laptop is defected or if its just a bad laptop to begin with. i really feel like i wasted my money...

im pretty sure i downloaded the correct driver from the hp website and have seen little change in performance.

also, average 3dmark05 mark is about 12600 for the 4650 mobility while i only score 10000. I got these number from notebook check for the 4650 mobility, id post the link but i am unable to post URLs.

    thanks in advance.

Can you say exactly which driver you are using? As a general rule, drivers from mainstream laptop manufacturers will not give you optimal (or even acceptable) performance. Try either ATI's new mobile Catalysts or, if that doesn't work for you, use Mobility Modder.

What CPU does your friend have? Did you update your GPU drivers?

Also check CPU/GPU temperature while gaming. AMD+ATI usually get hot, and Windows 7 seems to run slowly for this reason (checked my desktop with cpu at 80-85°C and also on my laptop).

My friends cpu is the zm-84. and yes, i have updated my drivers. And yes, im aware about the heat, and its alrdy at the low frame rates from the beggining of playing and i wouldnt say its performance progressivelt gets wrose, maybe because i have a cooling pad, im not sure tho. Thank you for the responses tho

Did you try undervolting to drop the heat further?
    Try K10STAT (Google it)

My little experience with ATI+AMD: Turion ZM-87 (2,4Ghz self replaced) + HD 4650: an old like battlefield 2, actually the only game i play, running at low fps (maybe 30-40) with native resolution and medium details. Probably due to the heat. Sold after 4 months at half price :(

New system: IC2D 2,1 + Nvidia GT 240M (slower than 4650) running bf2 at max details plus AA 8x avg 50 fps. Cool and fast.

So don't expect too much from your Turion, maybe compared to an IC2D 2,00Ghz i would say. Just try to keep the system clean, defragmented and updated. You are just getting the max as i can see.

And you below in 2d mark 2005 because as you can see all bench on notebookcheck are made on intel machines, so better cpu score.

its the overheating which is problem..

    1. undervolt CPU with K10stat.
    2. Get a powerful notebook cooling pad
    3. Get latest Ati 10.3 Catalyst notebook drivers
    4. Apply new thermal paste on CPU and GPU.. problem solved.

Is Gremo right though, i mean is my cpu just really slow in general and acting as a bottleneck for my gpu. Or is my cpu behaving this way due to heating problems? i'm going to do k10stat a bit later next week cause i have exams coming up and i don't wanna get too distracted. Thanks for all the replies, i really appreciate it.

it usually is heat problems.. ZM-82 is quite good but it overheats easily.. somemore hp has a crap cooling system.. undervolting will help.
