I am perfectly satisfied with my AMD powered notebook. I don't see myself upgrading for atleast another year or two.
-
I would have to agree.
All the gaming conferences, and the gaming consultation with game developers are with AMD not ATi. Even when go for graphics online, for a long time now, their website has been AMD Gaming, not ATi Gaming.
I still don't get the hate for AMD. I can't think of anything that AMD might have done to anger anyone. They have always provided affordable performance.
As far as I'm concerned, AMD does the best they can to allow ALL, and EVERYONE to enjoy the best games have to offer, and the best computers to offer at an affordable price.
What is there to be so angry about? -
R.I.P. ATI. It's going to be odd referring the Radeons as an AMD instead of an ATI after so many years. Though I still gladfully take their mobile graphics solutions over NVIDIA's anyday given their previous track record.
-
I think you misunderstood me. I said AMD won't have SMT since they felt it didn't give a good enough performance boost for the extra hardware needed; and they won't have HT because that's Intel's implementation of SMT.
I 100% agree that AMD's option should definitely be much better than HT, so given the same number of threads, AMD should spank Intel. Although core for core, Intel will still likely beat AMD. -
Say it slowly, "AMD Radeon HD 6830"
-
Lol, I have to admit when I skim read that I had to pause in between and re-read it again before realising that it's correct from now on!
-
Noooo.....it was one of the better Canadian companies. *sad face*
-
This could take a while. I saw the letters, I read it over... but my mind still saw ATI Radeon HD 6830.
-
Yeah... They haven't been Canadian for a long time.
-
Technically. But I still considered them Canadian even after the AMD merger/take over.
-
I would never dream of putting an nvidia chip on a laptop... not the way they are currently, at least.
Not gonna lie though, I'd probably go nvidia on a desktop all the way. It just seems AMD (ahuehuehauhue) gives me more per ounce of battery juice... Well, I haven't gotten the chance to test drive a graphics switching machine yet! -
I sort of have the opposite opinion. 5000 series desktop cards offer serious performance on less power and less $, but nvidia's optimus is superior to "amd's" switching currently

SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Granted, the song that came on was the cover, not the original, but still. Haha.
I wonder how weird it'll be to have a computer with both major Intel and AMD components in it.
"I have an Intel/AMD machine!"
"Aren't they direct competitors?"
"Don't ask questions." -
I like this one better than red!

does not ati have licences to make chipset for intel just like nvidia?
that could get even worst -
it just seems like to me amd wants their name on more hardware. they want people familiar with the amd name more.
this will also cause intel to lean on hardware developers to not use amd in their intel chipset machines. -
ATi did make chipsets, but intel ended that contract when AMD took over. And now ATi has chipsets for AMD.
-
No one will really make chipsets anymore anyway. Yeah there's still the Southbridge but how accurate is it to call something a "set" when there's only one of it.
-
I can't believe you guys are killing yourself over 2 changed letters in the name.
You're worse than Runescape players after a system update. -
Lol.
A name change is not a big deal.
It's more or less expected.
Might take time for some to get used to it, but other than it will be fine. -
lol runescape is basically members paridise while we free players get nothing.. i am nver playing that game again.. don't know why i did when i had more awesome games... anyways , this is a bad step considering ATI makes more money and profit than AMD does... and AMD sounds inferior to ATI for me..
-
Yeah, in opinion, ATI is a better sounding name than AMD. Having an AMD graphics card just sounds weird.
-
ATI sounds cooler than AMD
Every time i mentioned AMD to a friend he used to say "ooh aren't those really hot" -
to me its just marketing strategy.
between the two brands, it seems that ati has the better positive consumer feedback, as amd had been lagging intel (cpu-wise) in the past years. however ati is the brand that could and should beat gpu giant nvidia and has been doing it in the mobile and desktop consumer market in the past years, and until recently.
now aside from the obvious fact that marketing one brand instead of two if more practical budget wise, i think the 'smart people' in amd want some of that positive consumer feedback and loyalty of their graphics card to rub off on the amd brand name as a whole. could be a smart move, and they could use the now renamed amd gpu's to spearhead amd's brand awareness.
this could be a boon for us since it could also mean that amd may be willing to put in more resources into gpus since it will be a co-flagship product together with the cpu's -
And then you should reply.
"ooh, wasn't that a remark of an ignorant fool?" -
i was under the impression that the AMD server market is whats been keeping the company afloat
-
Quite a few laptops made in 2006-2009, with AMD Turion & Athlon X2 CPU's do run very hot. I have one as does my mom, uncle, and cousin. The new AMD CPU's are pretty cool running.

Yep, and that's the kind of dirty that don't wash off too quickly. Especially considering notebooks were just generally more expensive then, and when you spent 800+ on a decent notebook only to have all the problems they did... people tend to remember those things when purchasing. But from my understanding I have to agree with the comment above... AMD's server/opteron business kept the money flowing. -

I had an HP with a 1.8 GHz Turion x2. It certainly was warm, though it was for me quite a powerful machine at the time.
-
To be honest I was surprised that they didn't change the name from day one. But now it seems kind of silly. Even if only a name, ATI is recognized and don't know how it would hurt them to keep it or how it helps them to eliminate it.
-
it would be interesting to see what brand laptop had the most heat issues with the Turion and Athlon. My bet would be HP laptops as i think they are of poor quality.
-
Yes I've had 10+ HP/Compaq's with AMD CPU's and I would say 10 had heat problems. The Acer's with AMD CPU's still run hot, just not as hot. I had a Dell Inspiron 1501 with AMD Athlon 64x2 and it ran very cool.
-
Heh, gf has an Acer with a Turion and we have one at work. They are not any warmer than my Asus with Intel Core 2 Duo. In fact the intel is WAY WAY HOTTER.
-
It helps them because AMD is a more widely-known brand, and it's image can be bolstered by the quality of the previously ATI products. Get people thinking about AMD cpu's as well as AMD graphics.

It could turn off people who liked ATI but don't care for AMD (I'm sure there are more of them than people who like AMD but not ATI), plus it might get people thinking "Intel CPU with AMD graphics? Hmm ... no, thanks."
Ultimately, it probably won't make a big difference either way, but it's a shame to kill the brand. -
Quite honestly, I thought this could help the brand. Many people I know knew ATi graphics not by "ATi" but by "Radeon". If they see AMD and then Radeon, they might think "Oh, so they were responsible for this Radeon awesomeness? Lemme try their CPUs!" and then AMD sells more CPUs.
I could be totally wrong though. -
Lol ATI has been keeping AMD afloat especially recently when its 4000 and 5000 series have been thrashing NVIDIA..
I certainly find it hard to believe especially for older CPU's but to be frank , their phenoms seem to be running cooler than i5.. -
Do you have proof of that? Gamers aren't "people" when you're talking about wider marketing. We're a small subset of consumers, and we know the difference between ATI and AMD (or not). This combination isn't aimed at the kinds of people who frequent computer forums on the Internet
-
You really think so? I would have thought it would be the other way around.
AMD kills the ATI Branding!
