tl;dr
- availability will obviously suck first couple weeks at least.. RTX 3000 level suck

What's the point on releasing such a small batch of graphic cards? maybe is just to show 3rd party reviews but again, scalpers are the only people taking advantage of this supply strategy

Godfall has been tested at 4K/Epic with tools that check actual utilization and it is only pushing 6-6.5GB.
It's 2020, tech sites/content creators really need to update to reporting actual VRAM utilization. MSI Afterburner has it built in as an option now for **** sake. Stop being lazy.hfm likes this. -
Things like Doom Eternal with the useless Ultra Nightmare texture level have been proven to hit performance of 8GB cards, so it would stand to reason anything that was actually using 9GB would at least cause a dip vs a similar card with 11GB. -

Leak of AMD RT performance for tomorrow pretty much confirms performance levels anywhere from 2080ti to above 3070 but definitely below 3080. That is with AMD's own slides with no notes if SAM is off or on. Just really puts it into light why RT had zero part in their product rollout show.
Unless something changes radically in the reviews tomorrow, I suspect this seals the deal for me this time around I'll be sticking with Team Green as RT was a major point for my switch to 4k and GPU upgrade.

They are all out, just going to link HUB, the rest are easy enough to find on YT:
Seems the 10GB 3080 doesn't suffer against the 16GB 6800 XT at 4K Ultra very often at all. I saw a few games where the 1% low FPS was a little lower with the 3080 still having a higher average, so maybe that might be a small clue, but it still wasn't bad at all. It was somewhat surprising to see the 3080 take the lead at 4K most of the time. VRAM size claims seem to be, for now anyway, overblown. Take textures down one notch and bob's your uncle my guess. Doesn't seem like 10GB is really hurting anything at 4K at this stage.
Otherwise, really good showing by the 6800 XT, I'll still be grabbing a 3080 though. I really want the added RT performance even though HUB is still beating the drum of not caring about RT, as I play mostly games where RT is something I'd always enable if it's available I'd want better perf there. RT is going to be in more and more games in 2021, and I'm going to want to enable it. DLSS is going to continue to be implemented as well, and it's a killer feature when it is there IMO, and I'm not buying on the theoretical promise of a DLSS alternative from AMD even though I trust they will have something eventually. I've also had nothing but rock stability in my necessary eGPU scenario where I've had zero crashes in all sorts of sleep mode, disconnecting and reconnecting so green team has earned my trust on that front. The one killer feature HUB does like, Smart Access Memory, or PCIe resizable BAR, is something i'm never going to care about as I'm not building a desktop anytime soon.
I will say, I'm impressed and super stoked AMD finally caught them. It's only going to be good for the consumer that this is the new state of affairs. Can't wait to buy a new generation card sometime in mid 2021Papusan and electrosoft like this. -
It seems like the 6800XT is the king at 1080p, second after the 3090 at 1440p and third after the 3090 and the 3080 at 4k, always not considering RT enable. When RT is enabled the 6800XT goes to zero in performance. If the 6800XT had used GDDR6X and 320-bit bus it would have demolished the 3090 in every game. What a wasted opportunity. Now lets wait for more stock, apparently it was impossible to get a 6800XT for non scalpers non bots customers. SAM seems to be quite interesting though. Rage mode is just a waste of time.
-
I'm definitely not knocking RT, but I just don't understand (or see) the big deal. Just looks like fancy lighting, shadows, reflections, godrays etc that we already have? I played the Q2 demo a long time ago and it didn't do anything for me. I've watched some side by side videos in newer games and again I couldn't notice and difference. When that happens, and enabling it reducing my performance by even 1 fps, it gets disabled, no reason to lose performance when I don't get anything out of it in exchange.
I do like new features when they add something but hate it when they create a feature and rarely any games support it then it eventually just dies. -
It's here to stay and that's a good thing. Having truly accurate and performant real-time lighting and ray reflection, scattering and dispersion is like the holy grail for engine developers. We're probably still going to be in this middle ground of mixing methods for a little while since it's so intensive, but having the 80% of it is a HUGE step forward. It's going to open up a lot of new avenues for art direction and technical implementation over the next few years.Porter, JRE84 and electrosoft like this. -

HUB mentions that NVIDIA is working to implement a version of SAM via a driver update that will work on both Intel and AMD platforms. Hopefully it will be available on more than just Ampere and Z490/X570.

Welp, the reviews confirm the leaks and why AMD didn't highlight RT performance (well behind Nvidia) or DLSS (still in development).
Just about every reviewer basically says if RT is a priority, go Nvidia.
Overall, the 3080 ~= 6800xt with them trading blows in some traditional games at stock settings for both out of the box at 1440p+
If RT or DLSS mean nothing to you and you want pure rasterization, you can't go wrong with either one.
I'm curious to see if the 6900xt will have more than just 8 more CUs and maybe packs in more RT units somehow. I doubt it, but that would be awesome.
As of now, on every level, for my needs (4k, RT, DLSS for CP2077), 6800xt is a hard pass as Nvidia really does just flat out beat AMD badly at RT and DLSS (both supported in CP2077).
Also, if you're stuck playing at 1080p and don't care about RT and DLSS, these cards are not for you.....seriously. Unless you're gaming on a 2 or 3 generation old GPU, might as well stay where you are if you're stuck at 1080p. 1440p and up is where they start to shine.
Personally, I was gaming @ 2560x1600 since late 2004 and saw the fps just steadily increase every few years I upgraded GPUs till finally hitting the 4k itch.
As for RT, if you don't care that's cool. In the same vein, you can also not care about high levels of eye candy and crank your card down to the lowest graphics setting and most likely it will work at all resolutions with most cards from the last few generations.
I literally was playing WoW @ 4k with a GTX 1060 with the graphics setting at 2/10 getting 40-70fps on my desktop and then laptop connected to my 4k display. The idea is to want as much eye candy, fps or a good point between both depending on what you prioritize.
If I stuck with 2560x1600, I would have stuck with my 5700xt which was great even at Ultra settings. Once I switched to a 4k display, the need for a new card became readily apparent. With CP2077 and WoW being RT enabled, RT then became a priority. I don't really care about high frame rates. I do care about eye candy to max while trying to maintain ~60fps.
With RT enabled on consoles (thank you AMD!) and more and more games enabling RT, it is here to stay @Porter and the future of gaming eventually replacing hybrid rasterization / RT rendering when it gets powerful enough.
If raw rasterization is your cup of tea and RT/DLSS means nothing to you, I'd go with a 6800xt over a 3080, but that's just my personal pick. -
Don't get me wrong I'm super excited to see how well AMD did here, but the advantage seems to be, for me when I don't really care about $50-100 price difference, clearly in nVidia's side of the court.
The only thing I could see is if that extra 6GB of VRAM really shows it's utility within 2 years, I don't think it's going to though. Not for me anyway. I'd rather have the far superior RT and DLSS.Prototime and electrosoft like this. -

That's why I said for me, 6800xt is a hard pass. With my current and future game selections being RT enabled and some DLSS enabled its an easy choice this time.
Based on the poor RT showing, I fully expect Nvidia to release a 3080ti with the same RT capability of the 3080 but more cuda cores to match the 6900xt if needed.
But if you prefer AMD and want to sacrifice RT performance and bank on AMD getting their version of DLSS up and running sooner than later, I guess it comes down to personal preference?
Now that the smoke has cleared, I do think Nvidia won this round on the strength of their RT and DLSS along with overall win @ 4k.
One thing is for sure, AMD didn't do to Nvidia what they did to Intel this time around. -
Things it makes me think about is things like darkness and reflections being something even more useful in maybe something like a true OG Thief remake (not that thing from 2014), or perhaps being able to accurately model that in a CRPG like BG3/DOS2 where a thief's ability to hide in shadows or even the grandeur of spell effects could be super interesting and immersive. Obviously in run and gun twitch shooters it probably wouldn't be that meaningful except maybe for the odd reflection possibly showing you something that it wasn't possible to use it for previously. Like imagine a shiny chrome gun allowing you to see someone sneaking up, or accurate shadows giving away a position like they should.Porter likes this. -
The only scenario I see is where you do not care at all about RT perf, believe all the promises about the future added features, or you have a super hard ceiling in your budget and can't put that little extra toward a 3080. This isn't like the 2000 series launch where if you were in the market for a new GPU getting something with RT was truly getting a BRAND NEW tech and you could largely ignore the promise of it just to toy with it. We're in a scenario where it's now established and it seems strange to attach to promises by AMD that they will "work with devs to tone down RT to meet their card's way of doing it" or "DLSS reduced image quality :hand wave:.. wait don't look over here where we're actually working on it too!!!". This might be the first time a bunch of weird double speak from AMD is putting a bad taste in my mouth.

To be honest, the RTX 3080 at $699 vs the RX 6800XT at $650 if I has to choose (which I have) the RTX 3080 hands down! for $50 more, you get the same performance in traditional gaming, twice the performance in RT, DLSS, a more solid performance at 4k, encoding and features for live streaming. AMD 6800XT is just a graphics card while the 3080 is more like a bundle that also includes software

This is an interesting video using the 10900K, so no SAM advantage for AMD, of course no RT nor DLSS. The 6800XT beats the 3080 in 8 out of 10 games at 1440p:

AMD made SAM sound special, then Nvidia revealed that it's just part of the PCIE specification and that will soon implement their own resizable Base Address Register for Ampere, that will work with Intel or AMD processors.

Undervolted AMD RX 6800 with 183 W TGP offers clues about an upcoming RX 6800M laptop-grade GPU matching the desktop RTX 2080 Ti notebookcheck.net | Today
This is only speculations. But if it max out at 2080 Ti performance in coming gamingbooks I will say this is an huge failure. Only being able to match performance with yesterdays hardware is bad.
The RX 6800 GPU particularly efficient when it comes to undervolting, as its TGP can be reduced by 45 W down to 183 W. These figures are already laptop-friendly if we look at Nvidia's RTX 2080 Super mobility GPUs, so we can expect to see an RX 6800M GPU with 150-180W TGPs that matches the performance of a desktop-grade RTX 2080 Ti soon.BrightSmith likes this. -

Of course, the big story remains the continuing GPU shortages. Many were hoping AMD would do better than Nvidia, but it sounds like stock of the AIB partner cards is even worse than we saw with Ampere. As we noted in our RX 6800 XT review, that's not really surprising. Given a choice between producing more Ryzen 5000 CPU cores (80mm square per compute die) and more Navi 21 GPU cores (519mm square), AMD makes far more money off the CPUs and can produce more of them. Unless TSMC can start producing more wafers for all of its partners, the shortages could continue for many more months.

If you had hopes of getting a shiny new RDNA 2 graphics card from AMD this upcoming Black Friday, you'll likely be very disappointed. Even though AMD's launch for third-party custom Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards officially occurred today, every single tech store has sold out its entire stock in both aftermarket and reference flavors. That isn't surprising, as some retailers didn't even have stock to begin with.
