Alright so I am looking into buying a AOPEN notebook barebones but it comes with a 6600 Go however since this is MXM would it be possible to switch that out for a 7800GTX? Dell has them for $600

With the GTX I can configure essentially an XPS m170 but minus 2yr warranty and the 17in monitor (which I don't much care if I have or not) I could save 1,000 or so dollars this way! Or how about a GO 7800?

I know they're out there but it seems like it wouldn't fit and could be a bit hot.

ALso I understand that Alienware's 5500 includes this setup but that you can turn it down to 32mb or something, to save battery life. Does the AOpen do this? Seems like it should/would.

Dell cards are proprietary, so you can't switch them. Even if you could, the Aopen is MXM Type I or II, and a 7800 will probably only ever be offered for Type III.

The 'turn down' options is switching between integrated and discrete graphics. It's currently only featured on the Uniwill 259 series, which is sold as teh AW Area-51 5500. This is also a Type II chasis, so even if AW offers upgrades in the future or they become available, chances are the 7600 will be the top.

as Ice-Tea said, MXM cards have form factors..meaning an MXM1 card will only fit with MXM 1 slot...the same for MXM2 and MXM3...they will only fit into the same slot. the form factor is basically how big the card is, its cooling solution..etc...

    hope this helps

The cards that go into the XPS M170 aren't MXM format to begin with, they are specific to Dell notebooks.
