ok... so I was playing Counter-strike Source for the first time today on my ASUS G1S laptop. My graphic settings ( within the Nvidia control panel ) are 8x AA, 8x AF, and the game itself is run on 800x600 with medium settings and no AA.
Is this normal getting 50-80 fps on such a low resolution? It seemed even reducing the AA and AF in Nvidia control panel and reducing to low settings in-game had little affect on my fps.
I have laptopvideo2go.com's Nvidia driver v162.22. I've heard of other laptops with the 8600m gt getting much better performance in Source than my own...
Also, did anybody else have performance issues due to all of ASUS's software? I still might have some performance issues due to remaining bloatware.
If somebody could help me getting optimal performance that'd be great.
Note: I'm using Vista 32bit.

Reason is because of the 8x AA and 8x AF.... lower those down to x2 and increase the resolution to 1600x1200 wide screen! You'll still 30-40+ FPS in any map period! I'm loving playing that game at that high resolution.
Also, using the default drivers as well with no overclock. -
he couldn't play at 1600x1200 the G1s is only WSXGA+

As noted, lower or turn off the AA and set your screen resolution to 1680x1050. It will look much sharper/clearer.
-
Yea, AA set to 2x or 0x and put AF to 16x. AF is only ever a 0 to 3 fps decrease so keep it at 16x !
Native resolution with no AA is much better looking than a horrible resolution and tons of AA. -
As said before, even when i reduce AA and AF there are little changes even on the same 800x600 resolution.
-
did you get rid of it from the Nvidia control panel?
-
Indeed that is probably the problem. Forcing AA or AF from the control panel is a bad idea, since it causes all sorts of problems
-
I'm using an 8600m GT and running at 1440x900 (I think that is it) while playing source. FPS never goes below 35.
I have every setting maxed, but I lowered AA to 4x and AF to 8X, because I find those to be the sweet spots between performance and quality.
GET RID OF THE CONTROL PANEL SETTINGS.
Set everything to "Let Program Choose" or the option that sounds like that. Forcing programs to use graphical settings through the control panel is not something I have had much success with.
Also, I'd recommend the newer 163.44 driver. It improves performance a bit over the 162.XX line. -
Im running the gddr2 version of 8600M GT and play source with 0 x AA, 16 x AF at 1680 x 1050 and my fps is in the 50-80 range.
As stated in previous posts;
- Set the Nvidia Control panel options to their default values
- In game make sure it doesnt say "wait for vsync"
- Update drivers to 163.44 or 163.67
- For an extra up to 5 fps apply the cpu affinity trick (this works for all source engine based games)
Cpu Affinity Trick
- Load up Task Manager then load up CSS
- Alt+Tab to get from CSS to Task Manager
- In Task Manager select the process, most likely hl2.exe, right click it, select set affinity, uncheck CPU 1 and then close task manager and alt+tab back to CSS
- You will gain a few extra fps
